Rumors about changes at 46

TV Spy water cooler is also hinting about 46 hiring some known names for their news programs very soon. I can't think of many former anchors that would go to 46. Chuck Moore is probably set in the mountains as that anchor man, Don Farmer would not come back, Kimberley Kennedy is a possibility i guess, Cynthia Goode is in another career now, Angela Robinson was a mistake for 11, Kelly Mack (known as Morgan here) has been gone to long. Sandra Bookman is still holding down weekends in New York, Jeff Hullinger came to mind as he has been trying to move into news (now at WSB radio), Kerry Kilbride has been long gone but is not in TV now, Tom Sinkovitz is still unemployeed but has been gone a while. I think Bill Gaines is safe because he is a quality anchor so the big hire maybe a woman.

A rumor also surrounds the weather slot Gene Norman is vacating for the head weather job at the VHF CBS affiliate in Houston. Gene was quality beyond 46 and his new job shows that. 2 and 5 have the strongest lead weathermen in town by far and 2's total weather team is so strong and dominate. 5 has the best weatherman in town but Glenn is a close second. At 2 the 3 weekday meterologists have been there for over 20 years and the rest of 5's weather team is a revolving door. The only quality weather man not employeed now that has strong atlanta weather experience is Johnny Beckman but he only spent a short time at 46 after channel 11 made the dumba$$ move to demote him and cause him to leave. The money 11 threw at Beckman and John Pruitt to get them from channel 2 and then years later screw them over. At least Pruitt got back home to channel 2 to work with Monica again and be part of Atlanta's dominate newsteam which beats 11 regulary.

WGCL just hired Bill Gaines, so he should be safe for now.

Don Farmer is retired and living in Naples, FL, and does opinion pieces for the newspaper there.

Chuck Moore may need a job. WNEG is being sold, and may lose its CBS affiliation (possibly its news department). Although I suspect he might go into retirement.

Angela Robinson hosts "In Contact" on WPBA, which is produced by the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists

Jeff Hullinger may be an option. He now does the afternoon news breaks on WSB-AM.

Kimberly Kennedy is with Creative Services at WSB-TV, hosting "Hot Topics" as well as appearing in commercials. She quit WSB to work for the Bush campaign in 2000. She is no longer a credible journalist.

Johnny Beckman has a history of being outspoken against televison news practices. When he left WSB-TV in the early 80's, he sued (and lost) to get out of his noncompete. In 1993, he sent Creative Loafing a profanity-laced letter badmouthing people and practices. He retired about a year after joining WGNX.

John Pruitt, Kelly Morgan, Johnny Beckman, and Joe Washington were fired from WXIA in 1993 at the hands of then GM Greg Dubrow (who is now the CEO of Gannett). The bloodbath led to an entirely new anchor team of Angela Robinson, Mike Landess (now in Denver), Brian Albriecht (now at KHQ Spokane), and Fred Kalil was brought in. A new logo was created (the one used now), and "11 Alive" was dead (albeit for a short time).

John Pruitt rejoined WSB-TV in July 1994. WSB also unveiled a new logo at the time, and the station has been #1 ever since.

What happened to WXIA in 1993 and 1994 has happened at least five or six times at WGCL over the past 8 years. Ever since Meredith bought the station in 1999, it has been a disaster.

1999 WGNX "CBS Atlanta"
7/4/2000 WGCL-TV
2001 WGCL "Clear TV" - New Studio at 14th Street and introduction of "Clear News"
2/14/2002 - New Meredith exec hears of "Clear News" and almost has a heart attack. Known as the "Valentines Day Massacre"
2/2002 - WGCL "CBS Atlanta" with orange logo. All signs of "Clear TV" and "Clear News" are quickly removed
Late 2002 - WGCL "CBS Atlanta" with blue logo and CBS Evening News graphics
2003 - WGCL "CBS 46, Atlanta's NewsChannel". Jane Robelot, brought in in 1999, is fired.
2004 - WGCL "CBS 46" (Current graphics and music).
2005 - Meredith Broadcast President Kevin O'Brien practices racism and discrimination, fires GM Sue Schwartz because of her race, and tries to fire Gil Tyree and Gene Norman for the same reason. (O'Brien was fired as a result)
2006 - CBS 46 Morning News (formerly "Good Morning Atlanta") cancelled
2007 - Bill Gaines hired from Raleigh. "Better Mornings" is created

With a colorful history like WGCL's, you would have to be desperate for work in order to work there. Meredith needs to sell and get out of dodge, and let a new owner take over.

What about Shaunya Chavis? Could she be looking to overcome her 'live shot fiasco' at Channel 2? I always thought she was a fine anchor and reporter...
