"Bustos Media, the fast-growing company owned by Amador Bustos will now enjoy a combo in Seattle, as its agreed to purchase Country KAYO, licensed to Elma, WA, from South Sound Broadcasting for $20 million. KAYO, at 99.3 MHz, boasts a signal that reaches not only Bremerton, Seattle and Tacoma, but also the Washington cities of Aberdeen, Centralia, Olympia and Shelton. Bustos in December 2004 purchased KDDS-AM (La Gran D)/Seattle from Entercom for $6 million — a deal that gave Bustos its biggest market. With the purchase of KAYO, Bustos will now own 23 stations nationwide. Kalil & Co. was the exclusive broker for this transaction."

Aww...dang. There was something rather "comforting" about having the old KAYO calls back in the Seattle market and playing country again -- not to mention the battle that was barely beginning to brew of a "KAYO" vs. "KMPS" country showdown near the [kz]OK Corral. Guess it is just NOT meant to be.

Then again...how many of us would turn a back on a $20M check for ANY reason?!

But there's still KNBQ "Q-Country"....

That flamethrower on 102.9 has the best chance of taking on KMPS with their signal (can be heard clearly up here...even with Victoria's JACK (103.1) coming in just as strong. CFOX kills KAYO on 99.3 up here..) Not to mention with Clear Channel's resources and $$$.....

But when Bustos takes it over, the KAYO calls will probably be back on the block again....

Format Change is WEDS

Tomorrow is what I heard...

This was a purchase for the signal only - KAYO's country format did extremely well
and the station had been making money like crazy...

SSB says it was an offer they couldn't turn down; twenty million was the magic figure
(they've had offers in the 8-9 mill range that were just blown off!)

However, word is South Sound Broadcasting WILL retain The Eagle KFMY/97.7

Bustos also did this in Sacramento with Rimshot 80's Flash KXCL. Bought it from First Broadcasting and there were rumored changes coming soon. Fortunately (since i love this station) nothing has happened yet. The terms seemed similar but action has been taken much quicker there in WA than here. I'm really not too clear on ownership changes and LMA's but what could be keeping Bustos from flipping KXCL?? Not sure anyone here would know about the Sacramento Market and its politics, but since there's a lot of similarities in this situation, I thought I would pipe-in.

Re: But there's still KNBQ "Q-Country"....

Does anyone know if KNBQ can be upgraded to serve Seattle any better? Currently, the tower is west of Olympia, and the signal just barely penetrates north to downtown Seattle.

Re: But there's still KNBQ "Q-Country"....

it was weird to hear an ad for KNBQ on KAYO, urging listeners NOT to tune to KMPS, but to KNBQ. the last time i heard that was when KXRX changed ownership and i heard an ad for 107.7 The End. also, just before KYYX changed format, they urged listeners to tune to "K-PLUS"

tape recorders are running today and tonight to catch the change.

Maps lie. What are you smokin? that signal rocks the meters all the way north to like almost everett on my radios. Better Downtown seattle signal in my car than KMPS.

Re: Format Change is WEDS

The DJs on KAYO are saying it's happening tonight, while other sources are saying tomorrow. My guess is that they will flip formats at Midnight, but i'm going keep checking near the top of every hour from now until Midnight (maybe more frequently as time allows, and maybe later if they decide not to switch at Midnight), and record the format change to MP3. I'm also paying close attention to the songs they are playing, that may have the "goodbye"-type theme to them. That would be a good cue to start recording as well...

This is already an upgrade for what used to be KMNT. Previously, 102.9 transmitted from somewhere near Centralia (their COL), 100 kW @ 322 m HAAT (technically C0, 23 m above C1 status, although they were still licensed as a full Class C). They have to maintain a certain distance from, among other stations, KZOK, and the spacing reqiurements between US and Canadian stations is much more stringent than US-to-US stations.<P ID="signature">______________

Call Sign change for KAYO

I was curious enough to check the call sign query on the FCC web site for KDDS. Sure enough, back on June 3rd, a request for the call sign KDDS-FM was filed by Puget Sound Broadcasting LLC (persumably on behalf of Bustos Media, to match their AM counterpart).

"This is a message from the management of KAYO. a country music radio station you apparently liked long enough to still keep your dial tuned to this point in this message. We are going off the air tomorrow. We now urge you to listen another small time country station that will eventually rendered moot again by KMPS's huge ratings, KNBQ...."

I remember those. And the KLSY ads on the newly launched KIRO-FM 100.7 in 1992.

Re: But there's still KNBQ "Q-Country"....

96.5 did it back in 1999 after they switched from Young Country to "The Point, 80s and more", telling listeners to tune into KMPS.

Being a successful station, i'm kinda suprised they didn't choose to move the format, calls, and crew to 97.7

I even have tape of when someone did this when a station flipped TO country --- KOL ran ads for everyone; especially KJR and KING as they passed baton to KMPS @ 1300AM - September, 1975.

But the best one of all was KMTT who bought time on several Seattle stations (format competitors) at end of week -- and ran spots for a new "Soundtrack" called the Mountain during the entire weekend before it launched. All their ACTIVE competitors were promoting the new station until people started wising up and calling each other.....

Now...I'll have to check with KNBQ people and see if they want any of my old KNBQ t-shirts. A little duct tape over the "97.3" and the references to "Rock" or "Hits" and you got some up-to-date apparel goin' on......

JUST FLIPPED AT 6:57PM...

The station just flipped a few minutes ago... Sounds like they're simulcasting 1210 AM.

And I missed recording it.. Anybody catch it on tape, and willing to e-mail me a copy?
