Rumors

Just when you think all the gossips have moved on, a new batch steps up and kicks things into overdrive. If you swallow everything that's out there, no one in the three Knoxville groups is happy with the status quo, and all are going to do something about it. Four out of five rumors involve Daddy Pirkle, so I guess that puts him in the drivers seat.

Or more likely, everybody is in the same boat and out of that discomfort will come the growth or decline of the Knoxville radio market.

Talk amongst yourselves.

And not a one of the rumors involved a format change for 95.7. Shows you that any real changes will stay under wraps usually until you hear it on the air.

knoxville radio,
i know the ratings were low on wqjk 95.7 jack fm but there were more listeners than i think the ratings showed. woki 100.3 - I-100. please come back and do top 40 classic hits of the 1980's and 1990's. do not play just 200 of them like other radio stations did. take a chance and play all of them. take e-mail requests and facebook post requests. it will work daddy prickle and you make money and show b 97.5 - wimz 103.5 94.3 the x - Q 93.1 - star 102.1 - hot 104.5 - i 105.3 - river 106.1 and wivk 107.7 how to run a radio station. you did it in the 1980's and 1990's and you can do it again. please take a chance and try it again.

I do not have any "inside" info but I will bet that all of Pirkle's stations are paid for. He can do what he wants. If he is making salaries and expenses at 100.3, and he is happy, why work for "the tax man"?

secondchoice is most likely right. Johnny Pirkle owns his stations most likely, no debt. If there is a 100.3 LMA, Journal is a likely suitor.

With any LMA or purchase, Pirkle would require the pick-up of a few peoples' contracts that would almost force Journal to put the 100.3 format or a variation of it on 93.1 or 104.5.

Of course if Journal has big enough pockets and is willing, they could just negotiate and payoff the peoples contracts without picking thm up or the talk format. (or Pirkle could sell/lma 100.3 & take back 94.3 & place his talk format there).

Either way, you gotta think with Mike Hammond on board, Journal has to be thinking about getting their hands on 100.3. And they seem to be the obvious group that's in decent financial shape and are still under their market cap.

Assuming someone (Journal) picks up 100.3 (buy or LMA) would you go Country and make a run at WIVK (my first choice), or one of the South Central operations? Of course someone could go AA, Alliterative or a Rock Hybrid with the UT campus it just might work.

The previous suggestion of moving Q93 to 100.3 and putting classic hits on 93.1 is the best idea I've heard.

What do you bet there's a building full of people on Old Kingston Pike that would love for Johnny to buy 'em out?

I agree. I think this would be a no brainer if Journal can get Pirkle to let go of the 100.3 signal. If I was Joural, I might also make one other shuffle if that does happen. (move Q93 to 100.3, and then also swap 104.5 & 93.1's formats. I would place Hot's rhythmic format on 93.1, and the new classic hits or adult hits/Jack type format (either would work), on 104.5. I'd do this simply for the reason that even though both are class A's, 104.5 has a slightly better and farther reaching signal outside of the city than 93.1. The formats would match up better that way.

I would be very surprised if Pirkle made any moves with either of his stations. He's finally convinced his son to sell of his business and devote 100% of his attention to running the company.

knoxville radio fans.
do you think that prickle would LMA the 100.3 fm signal to journal?? i agree that he will not sell 100.3 fm when he can make money LMA it to another company like he did when he LMA it to citadel before. wonder if journal would be interested in doing that?? only way i think they can get the 100.3 fm signal. wivk 107.7 would hate to have Q 93.1 on 100.3. it would make them worry big time. i think that south central would love having Q 93.1 on 100.3 fm signal. that would make b 97.5 the number 1 station in the ratings. then they could make more money with their radio commericals. just think about of it. this is what i would do if i was in charge of journal. i would be talking to prickle right now and have the Q 93.1 on 100.3 the friday before ut plays their first football game.

Whatever happens, I hope the big Q Boomsday announcement is something that will shake things up a little and not just be that they're bringing in a nice concert or something. WIVK is ripe for the picking, and there's not one person in that building that isn't insulated now from whatever success or failure comes their way.

It's corporate radio time, boys and girls. There was a time when you were only as good as your last victory. Now a big win just means more paperwork.

I hope so. maybe Q country 100.3 - that would be nice. journal LMA a good signal and prickle gets money for renting or leasing out his 100.3 signal. journal wins and prickle wins at the same time. i hope that is what happens. WIVK look out. Your new owner Cumulus broadcasting came to knoxville at the wrong time. you feel the same tennessee cowboy??

Q would have to play Willie Nelson for me to want to listen. But WIVK is ripe and Q has the guy who knows how to out-Taylor Swift them.

Q's big Boomsday announcement was that they were lighting up the old JFG Coffee sign. That was nice. Not so big. But nice. Maybe their next earth-shattering news will involve shaking hands with Easton Corbin at the fair.

I've been told that Cumulus hates Public Affairs programming and doesnt give a flip if its required or not. Why don't Johnny P rehash "Soundoff" or am I behind and its on somewhere else in K-town? I think it was big for the Frog on Sundays for years..

I may be mistaken, but isn't a rehash of Soundoff already on 100.3 every morning, known as the Bob and Ed Show?

During the fall, Soundoff is changed to a sports show on Sunday mornings, hosted by Jimmy Hyamns, that runs on WIVK and the WNMLs. WIVK is the only station in Cumulus' cluster that has to run PA programming, the live talk on WOKI and WNML A/F fills their requirements, from what I understand.
