Hola,

A little birdy told me that there's a new talk station coming to columbia very soon.

Justin:

I am sure you are referring to the one that Andy Thomas is involved in that would be an LMA of WQVA 1170 AM.

The documents and business plan for that transaction have been circulatiing online for a couple weeks, in part through Joe Azar's email list as an open solicitation.

Both WQVA and WCEO, I believe, are also listed for sale with a broker, although they are not identified specifically.

Andy Thomas is only involved as the Morning Drive Time Host. He will have no other input into the station management or programming. Sherry Martschink, a former State Senator and weekend talk show host in Charleston will be on from 9AM till Noon followed by Dave Ramsey. I will host the 3PM till Six slot.

I have reached an agreement with the owner and if I can secure enough funds to pay the rent and sufficiently promote the station by August 11th, the new format will hit the air around August 15th. My lease will be for no less than one full year with an option to buy. The Weekend Programming will be all local except for re-runs of Dave Ramsey every Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Of the twelve hours of Prime Time Weekday Programming, nine will be local. Andy will be doing a show very much like the last one he was doing in Charleston, focusing on local culture and entertainment as well as local, state, and national news. Sherry will talk a lot of politics but she has other concerns being a disability advocate, writer, consultant, state representative, state senator, and talk show host. As always, I will just be me, testing my point of view in the market place of ideas and free speech. It is not a done deal yet but it is also not rumor.

All the programs and ads will be produced in a highly professional manner and if things go according to plan, the new station will be seriously promoted in other media outlets. I will post again on the ultimate success or failure of this effort. But if any of you are interested in more just respond and I'll get you the details.

Which station? I assume 93.9 right? If so, good luck and I hope things work out. I will def. give it a listen when it comes on.

Neil:

The solicitation David has been circulating has been for AM 1170. That may have changed, I don't know. I only saw the first couple versions of the documents.

You're correct. It is for 1170 AM, which by the way is currently on air and simulcadting with WIGL. It is an amazingly clear signal and will be perfect for a new talk station.

My question is that do we need another talk station in market and hopefully this will not be l;ike the other two.

I assure you it will not be like the others. There are actually four talk stations in Columbia: 560, 620, 1230, and 1320. WQVA 1170 will be all local except for Dave Ramsey, and he discusses personal finance, not politics.

And to those of you who wish me luck I am grateful. These are tough times to get businesses involved. Money is tight, budgets are set, etc. But I have two weeks to give it all I've got and see what happens.

I really hope that you are successful because we need something that is different from the rest and that is the reason I don't do much talk radio.

I was tuning down the AM dial this morning to see ifthe new station was on the air yet, and since I did not hear it yet, I was wondering when the transition was going to take place.

My deadline has been extended and I am still trying to put together the neccessary capital. The possibility of purchasing the station outright might be a smarter option. Stay Tuned.
