Rumours? Is CBS Changing Formats

M

Started hearing rumours that CBS was going to change formats to CHR in New York and Los Angeles this week or very soon. Anyone hear anything about this? What stations would they change if they did?

Also heard Clear Channel would possibly respond to challenge by launching a News Talk on FM in New York. KSYR would go head to head against KROQ, an Urban in Atlanta and a AC in Dallas.

Wanted to find out if anyone has heard anything about this or if this is all rumour mill.

Thanks

No matter what direction or how hard you spin the format wheel, you're still going to get the same basic formats. Rumors or not, it's hardly exciting news anymore...........

Please state the source of your rumor before posting to any message board if you want any credibility. The most notorious format change happened without any rumors preceeding them. Right, Andrea :)

Two other format changes that hit everyone by surprise were:

WNCN (classical) to WAXQ (Rock)

WQCD (smooth jazz) to WRXP (Rock)

Bruce

Bruce, Bruce, Bruce - after all these years, you are only figuring me out NOW?? :)

Several points here:
1) The 'NCN/AXQ was NOT a complete surprise - I remember when it was going to happen, there was some press in the paper about the 'NCN faithful trying to save the format...
2) Same for 'QCD - but since that frequency has been "format of the month" for over 35 years... ;)
3) Hey, BeachBum, don't hold your breath on KYSR whippin KROQ's butt...ain't gonna happen...and if it does, I'D be shocked...
4) Hey, Bongwater (aside from the fact that you're a sweetie... :-*), so why are you so surprised about rumors about format changes??
5) And Bruce S, as for what you are referring to, THAT one was a complete surprise to me, but since it's in the past, let's leave it there, okay?? :)

Andrea

Anyone think CBS-FM to Jack was a Suprise? Jack BACK to CBS-FM rumored for about a year before the actual return, Suprise to No one.

*IF* CBS-FM were to flip this time. I would doubt it would ever EVER Come back again.

*IF* CBS was to flip anything, I'd put my money on 92.3 as well.

First of all, there were rumors about CBSFM to Jack for MORE than a year - I knew that for a fact...
Secondly, iirc, practically from the minute that Dan "Wonderboy" Mason ORIGINALLY took over as the one in charge of all the CBS O&Os, there was a LOT of talk about Jack "hitting the road" and CBSFM coming back...
Thirdly, I seriously doubt that CBSFM would flip this time, given all the bad press that it caused not just in New York, but ALL OVER THE COUNTRY; and
FINALLY, if CBS was to flip ANYTHING, i would have to put my money on 92.3 as well..."Disco 92" has a nice ring to it (and would make Tony Santiago smile... :))..

One more thing - if the 2005 to 2007 period (those who know know what i'm talking about :)) taught me ANYTHING, it is "never say never..."

It's been talked about in here that the most likely candidate for a format change on the CBS Radio New York O&O would be 92.3

It's been awhile since anyone has taken on Z-100 directly, although that brief stunting on 102.7 before the flip to "Blink" was the closest. However Z-100 IS Z-100 and have been a powerhouse on the FM landscape for the longest time, although CBS would have the resources to compete against them.

It would be foolish of ANY station to match what Z-100 is doing. At least when 'PLJ had tweaked their CHR format in the 90's with Scott Shannon there, it took on a more rock approach (read...NO HIP-HOP). For CBS, the only way they may be able to compete with a Z-100 would be a hybrid between that station and a Pulse 87. They could still play the CHR that has been a Z-100 staple but the one thing that would set them apart, that Z-100 doesn't really cover much of, is adding some elements of edgy dance to it. Not to the point that 92.3 would BE a "Pulse 92" but definitely cover some ground there that everyone above 92 isn't tapping on. Not even 'KTU.

Basically, the station should sound like this...

http://www.z1035.com

The link is Z 103.5, a CHR station in Toronto that is VERY dance friendly. You still have your Flo Rida, Lady Gaga, Britney, T.I., etc, just like Z-100 but you then add artists such as Ercola feat. Daniela "Every Word", Sylvia Tosun "Underlying Feeling", etc.....stuff that Z-100 NEVER touches yet has a peaked interest because of a Pulse 87 being in the picture. Pulse, at that point, could even become more dance intensive in the process.

And Andrea, here..... ;D there's my teeth!

I strictly remember them running promos that said, "Today's music... without all the rap..."

Reports are that in Dallas - reportedly at the top of the hour - CBS will flip Movin 107.5 to a "Spanish CHR"... Perhaps that is the fate of 92.3 here?

The New York market is already cluttered with four Latino stations on the FM; three current/hit (La Que Buena 92.7, La Mega 97.9, La Kalle) and one A/C (Amor 93.1). It would not make sense to go that route because of that clutter. I don't know the Dallas market but if there were less stations on the FM that are Latino based there, then it would make sense to flip a station that way. But not for New York; CBS would be making a HUGE mistake flipping 92.3 in that direction.

Likewise, there's also a clutter of R&B radio here too with Kiss, Hot 97, Power 105.1 and 'BLS. Putting 92.3 in that direction would also be a mess.

NO ONE is going after Z-100. But at the same time you really CAN'T go after a Z-100. So if CBS Radio wants to go hit radio, lean it dance. Not to an extreme point of a Pulse 87 but a slight lean in terms of the contemporary sound while still maintaining the CHR fold Z-100 has been known for all these years. Z-100 barely touches current dance so that would be the angle to get them on.

BTW, the website for "Mega 107.5" in Dallas is now up on the old 'Movin" site.

IS K92.3 COMING TO NEW YORK CITY?

"K92.3 Hit Music for New York City" might be unveiled in the coming days...

*rhythmic dance leaning chr would be a disaster for CBS

Let me say this as clearly as possible. To that I suppose it's my own fault, being a dance music activist, that whenever I say something regarding dance people think I want to change an entire station over. In the case of a CBS going to a CHR...

I DON'T WANT A FULL-TIME DANCE LEANING STATION THERE!! Sorry for the cap kentucky; I've just been misinterpreted about my thoughts on the other radio board thinking that all I would want is a dance outlet. And here's a case where I'm actually saying that the station SHOULD be a CHR.

To clarify, again, it would make sense for CBS to go against a Z-100 but there's NO WAY you can compete with a Z-100 sounding like them even with all of the financial resources CBS have to pursue this. I DID say LEAN it with some current dance that Z-100 nor 'KTU touches but not sound like a Pulse 87 in the process. Okay, I'll even go as far as say......ADD A LITTLE COUNTRY MUSIC IN HERE TOO. Most CHR's have country in rotation, when you consider the young artists that are out there such as a Taylor Swift and a Carrie Underwood. Perhaps adding two country tracks that ARE in the Billboard Top 40 into the mix would certainly be different than what Z-100 is doing now.

Maybe this is thinking "outside the box". But let's face it...."conventional wisdom" with radio has failed as of late especially that you do have the digital media players, the Internet as well as MySpace profiles where people are getting the new music from.

Once again, my apologies for the bold caps earlier. I just want to make sure other people don't misinterpret my thoughts. Oh, what the heck...someone will anyway! LOL

Online stream for K-Rock is down, and Opie has put up a pic on his twitter from Erock of the K-Rock sign sitting in the floor

Mmm, interesting. But maybe they switch to the new CBS Radio building? That's why the stream is down?

... and a moving crew is here.

Why are all the pictures leaving despite the fact that we will still be broadcasting here???

The suits are moving in - oh boy.

Something is going on. If a flip happens (which seems very possible) I would bet it's 92.3....the station has shown literally no growth. Fresh has more potential, IMO.
