Run your own TV station (imaginary TV station, that is)

Just wanted to let you guys know about a game that's been running for a few years that lets you run your own TV station. Of course, it's fake, but it's a lot of fun as well.
Check it out (you don't have to be Canadian to play):

There's a similar game dealing with US commercial over-the-air television -- Fantasy Television America.

There's even one for British commercial OTA TV -- 6-Net -- which is a lot harder to enter, regardless of where you're from, than the CFTC or FTA.

I've been doing that for years. Except with radio. I did do TV once. <P ID="signature">______________

FTA looks like the hardest thing in the world to do and I would wait until after February to join that since they're in the middle of merging with another company. How does one go about starting stuff like this. The Canadian one seems to be better off as it allocated channels out unlike FTA which let's anyone choose whichever channel they want. I find it so confusing. I'd rather start my own game but I have no idea how I would even start.

Well, I joined FTA yesterday (looks like fun) and I mentioned that to a couple of people. I do feel like a table of allocations would be beneficial to the game. But the main aim of the game is to play with station schedules and graphics, namely, the non-technical side.

I did notice you joined I joined right after and am waiting to see if I can start with the station I applied for we'll see. The game is bound to get new people in it now but it needs more markets namely in the midwest. It's hard for someone like me from Iowa to play when there isn't an Iowa market in the game Minneapolis isn't even on it yet.

Ask them to create a new market. They made Richmond at my request.

That sounds like a computer simulation I took part in
back in the late '70s in a radio-TV class. We divided
the class into three sections (one for each of three
fictional networks), and we had to put together three
nights of primetime from a list of fictional shows. The
winning network was the one that made the highest
profit. My network (and my cohorts put me in charge)
resembled ABC circa 1978; we got the highest ratings
but we had to spend the most money to do it. IIRC,
the network that most resembled NBC (third place at the
time) actually was the most profitable (which I doubt was
the case in real life, since Fred Silverman was
constantly turning over his schedule there).

I'd like to try this game, if they let me pick a real market
and program it the way I want.

I joined as well. I submitted an application for an ABC/MyNetwork duopoly in Denver, but unless the guy who owns the ABC affiliate decides to sell it to me (He did put it up for sale), it looks like I'll be stuck going with MyNetwork and/or indie.

If the latter turns out to be the case, it's probably just as well since I'll also be distributing some shows for syndication anyway (READ: KingWorld), which will help IMMENSELY in gettng me some more points to works with (Points = MONEY on there BTW) and the shows will air on my station(s).

If I do somehow land the ABC/MyNetwork duopoly, I've got plans for that contingency as well.

Either....It looks like FUN. :D

Cheers :D
