Rush Limbaugh has told his audience he has lung cancer

Which is frankly a horrific thought.

I do know that radio people here in Pittsburgh who worked with Limbaugh when he was a young DJ
recall that he was a genuinely kind and decent individual.

I've always wondered that about Michael Savage. I assume Alex Jones is just the same in real life, but Savage's shtick sounds like an act.

Just because his show airs in Chicago doesn't mean he is a Chicago host or his show is based here the only sense it made was to you, either case whoever that moved it thank you. Stephanie Miler show airs here on WCPt 820, but that doesn't make her a Chicago based host. And Ben Shapiro that shows which includes his podcast, and his live 2 hour show also airs here on the same station, and even has a picture of him in their studio, that still doesn't make him a Chicago host?

My guess would be that's who he is. Now it's his personal life that's probably 'out there' and not what you might consider conservative. Good luck to him.

All the networks were on hand and showing the SOTU speech last night and couldn't back out of it when the surprise announcement and presentation were thrown into it. Who but Fox among the major networks would have covered a regularly scheduled medal presentation of any kind to Rush Limbaugh? Even when the recipients of the medal are non-controversial, the presentations to them are segments on the nightly news, not full-length specials on all networks. Rush may or may not still be alive when the next formal ceremony is held, but I don't think Trump the innate showman was even thinking of that when he decided to work his No. 1 radio booster into the State of the Union. He merely knew he could never get a bigger audience and better ratings for doing so at any other time.

Yet, WLS was a huge "get" back in the day, and in fact was the first time I heard him. I believe 'LS also built a huge advertising campaign around him. I agree, he was never a Chicago broadcaster, but he gained fame thanks to markets like Chicago and WLS.

With all due respect, Rush is America's most outspokenly political radio personality.
It is very difficult to discuss him in any context without things getting at least a bit political.
 
I guess the best politically correct response would be simply this: Rush Limbaugh is perhaps the most famous right wing commentator on the air today. His alliance is strong within the Conservative/Republican party. If and when he decides to step down due to illness, there will be a large gap and this could change political structure as we know it. That is how powerful he is. Sure, there are others, like Hannity, but nobody has been at the helm of the Republican ship as long as Rush has. Movements need a voice. This is not political, just fact. (BTW, I am not a Rush fan, but I recognize his strength).

I agree, and maybe it's possible with a generation of talkers, all of whom represent one view, getting into their 70s, retiring for whatever reasons, perhaps this will provide an opening for an entirely new approach to talk radio. Because its clear that people under 50 aren't very interested in much of what's on talk radio now. So there will be a vacuum. There will likely be an opportunity for new voices and new ideas. We'll see what happens.

Clarification: there is no objection to discussing political programming on radio and tv as long as it is respectful.

The deleted posts were solely about politics with no connection to the electronic media. That is not permitted.

as much as I hate him and his political views that might be considered radical and polarizing to some, but at the end of the day, he did change the radio business and his talk show is to news/political talk what Howard Stern was to hot talk/shock jock radio shows. and he had a well known but very controversial career, and I'm sure he had the "Howard Stern effect" when it came to ratings as in many listeners either listen to him because of his views is that they agree of or they listen to him cause they hate him and want to see what thing he's gonna say to make them mad. the Howard Sterm effect is better known as hate listening. also, I never want to wish death on him, especially by cancer. as much as I hate him, I still don't want him to die that way, cancer sucks period.

That reminds me of a great Archie Bunker line from "All in the Family." His liberal daughter Gloria was lecturing him about how awful it is that so many people are shot to death in the US every year, and his response was "Would it make you feel any better, little goil, if they was thrown out of windows?"

So, would you feel better if Rush were to drop dead of a heart attack?

I think once Limbaugh stops doing live shows, a lot of news/talk stations will experience big time ratings plunges.

Cumulus may deeply regret not unloading stations such as KSFO, WJR, WLS, and others. WJR in Detroit is already suffering the worst ratings in the history of the station. That issue will only worsen once Rush departs. iHeart's 760/93.7 in Denver will see its ratings tank, and so will WOR in New York, WRKO in Boston, WFLA in Florida and others.

As syndicator, Premiere / iHeart stands to lose a LOT of money.

That will be the day when that will happen, I mean was he the first person to have a national syndicated talk show, or would Howard Stern count? If Rush departs will WLS in Chicago survive they of course have a lineup that is now mostly syndicated talk shows, expect for morning drive and a 2 hours in the late afternoon going into evening hours. Not sure if the other talk show hosts on their lineup picks up the audience here.
