Rush Limbaugh has told his audience he has lung cancer

KFI bad example of successful station without Rush. Being the 2nd largest market affords them the ability to hire top local talent. Try that in Spokane or Peoria. Won’t work, generally.

So I guess that doesn't apply to New York?

Rush was once heard on KFI, but management felt running syndication in the middle of the day hurt the overall station billings. So they spun it off to KEIB.

The point isn't the size of the market. The point is that KFI is now positioned to survive without Rush, because it's already done it.

True. And you make my point!

You want a medium market talk station that'll survive without Rush? KARN in Little Rock. WDEL in Wilmington.

WABC under Cumulus ownership dropped Rush to try to promote their own host. WOR, owned by Rush's syndicator put him there. That's a key aspect that even a quick analysis should have included.

That is why I said “generally”. There always are some exceptions. I think you are nitpicking a bit here.

The same could be said about your comment about KFI. My original post was made in response to the view that talk radio may not survive the end of Rush. See that quote below. I don't agree with that. I gave KFI as an example.

I don't see AM or FM commercial News/talk radio staying for long though after Rush is gone.

You have to admit that talk radio (in general) is becoming more and more like the other oldies format. Quite similar, actually. Not many of the real money (meaning younger) demos bother with it. Add to that, how many of the affiliates around the country are 1,000 to 5,000 watt AMs? Who listeners to AM anymore? How long are those stations going to be around?

Oops ... gotta go ... Steppenwolf, "Born to be Wild," is on the radio. 1968 was a great year!! I'll go take a nap after I listen.

Vietnam. Kennedy. King. Riots. Great year?

For music??? Yes it was a great year. Kennedy. King. Riots? FARRRR from great. You also forgot the war. That tends to happen sometimes ... forgetfulness ... when you get older.

1968. 52 years ago. I was 17. Yes, right in the demo talked about in my previous post.

Yes, as I touched on, music and talk radio. Very similar. Baby boomer ... decent 2020 talk radio age group. Yep ... both Oldies. Nope, not much appeal with advertisers.

I agree, but a lot of that is because all the hosts are over 60. If you play old music, it attracts old listeners. You have 70 year old talk show hosts, and that's who listens. That's partly why they're bringing in people like Ben Shapiro. The funny part is many of the current talk station listeners don't like Ben because he talks too fast.

YO!!! Slow down, you talk to fast!!!! (Kidding).

Good points. So, do you think those younger people will come in the room anyway with new, younger, talent? The reason they still listen to terrestrial radio is because of the music ... and even that is challenged because of all the latest apps. What happens to the "old-timers" who get annoyed with the new "kids, on the air, who don't know anything?" (Slow down!!!!!!).

Ben Shapiro *and* Buck Sexton. The two young-uns. We'll see how that goes. I'm thinking Buck.

I used too listen to Rush years ago.No offense to him and other talkers now I want to just listen to music on the radio....
Did not know that he replaced Morton Downey Jr on the radio..I used too enjoy Morton's TV show on Ch9..Later on I found Wally George show online So is some Morton shows too...

I hope he gets the best care.I lost an uncle with the same thing...

The idea that the way for talk radio to appeal to younger demos is to put on a host who sounds like he's snorting helium is bogus. Young people LOVE Bernie Sanders. 'Spain that!

A friend described the attitude towards "democratic socialism" many years ago and in a different country this way:

If you are young, and you don't believe in socialism, you do not have a heart.
If you are mature, and believe in socialism, you do not have a brain.

The friend who said this was a station owner in Venezuela.

A similar quote was attributed to Winston Churchill, Victor Hugo, and King Oscar II of Sweden, although some form of it may go back to at least 1875.

And the majority of these proposals have nothing to do with textbook socialism and are much like programs and proposals that even "conservative" parties support or have continued to varying degrees in countries that maintain close alliances with the United States.

If they're so "socialist" then why are we on such good terms with them?

That's my point. Politics trumps age. Content trumps age. Assuming that it takes a young person to get the attention of a young person is an old person's misconception. It's pandering.
