Rush Limbaugh - watering his plants

At this point in time, after the drug(s) admission(s) - it would be prudent for Rush to calm down, but like the
Bush White House it is just "business as usual". Will this reflect in his ratings? Will the base leave him?
When will WRKO throw the blowhard overboard? Today he said "What they've put the Libby family through!"

Excuse us? What about what Cheney put the Wilson family through? We should THROW Limbaugh and be through with the EIB Network - Elephant Is Boring!

THE PLANTS that call in are the worst thing. They have the question in advance (written by Limbaugh's producers no doubt), and Limbaugh agrees with his own mega dittos...awful

The Wilson family is not without sin and Valerie's job was the worst kept secret in the world. I'm still waiting for an explanation how an undercover operative worked openly at Langely.

As for Rush, he's always been a blowhard. This is hardly news.

Limbaugh is the reason WRKO bumps Red Sox day games to WEEI-850.

It would be better for WRKO to drop Limbaugh altogether. The station has to pay cash for his show, cash that can be better spent on the Red Sox.

WABC dropped the Yankees after the 2001 season because Limbaugh whined and cried about being pre-empted for day games. Disney (which then owned WABC) was all too happy to appease this talk-show fascist.

I agree, Rush should be dropped, and not just because he is a drug dealing, lying, pig, but because his show is just plan bad. Plus, let's talk about "racism." They let that dingbat from Providence for calling the Green Party candidate a "fat lesbian," which, umm, she is, and Imus gets fired for "nappy-headed hos ..." but Rush can play a parody song, "Barack, the magic negro," and not get one word about it?

I've been checking out "Finneran's Forum" - especially when the traffic isn't that bad in Mass. and I switch from 'BZ - and the show doesn't work. He sounds so bad in the morning. The hot talk thing just doesn't fit him and he just sounds so uncomfortable. It also sounds like he has been trained in the "make fun of liberals and hope we can sell it" school of programming which has led to many unemployed programmers across the country instead of letting the host be the host.

But, having said that, I would bet, if he was in a more NPR-ish format, he would shine. Maybe they should move Finneran to midday and let him have policy wonk discussion like Gene Burns used to do. Cut his rumored-to-be-very-large salary and hire a Clapprood-type - who doesn't smoke or whine - to co-host with him. A few months ago, I heard Finneran talking national politics with former state Sen. Warren Tolman and it was like the old days of WRKO - interesting, thought-provoking, and not belittling, obnoxious name-calling.

Replace Finneran's morning show with a sports/news hybrid show, with a ton of headlines, Sox highlights, some national sound from AP, traffic and weather updates, maybe one reporter gathering content from the day before.

Keep Howie on.

Get rid of Michael Savage.

Keep Coast to Coast.

I haven't heard it but when I worked overnights in the late 1990s, I liked listening to Art Bell. Sometimes, it was insane, but fun. Other times, I would put on Bob Raleigh on WBZ. It would depend on my mood. Overnights should be serious but not overwhelmingly contentious.

I'd agree with the first two but how about Phil Hendrie whose new talk show
has a 1 am start time here in the east?

To all the previous posters...

When ANY talk show host no longer has listeners...this stops the advertisers from advertising...and usually silences the "host" forever?

So if you hate anybody in particular...encourage your friends and co-workers to stop listening!

They...on the other hand....will either acquiesce (agree) with you...or tell you to "go pee in your hat!"

argy, it is not that simple. Rush's program probably costs very little (so they can spend a ton on Finneran; that's twisted logic we can get into later). You know that Mike Savage is probably a freebie. Where Rush is tired and old a "new voice" that sounds like him, Ed Schultz, could probably fit into that time slot very nicely.

The catch is that Entercom goes where the grass is greener. Right now they get a better tax deal from the
Republicans so the majority of the hosts do the Rush/Savage/Howie "vote Republican" line even when they absolutely detested Healey/Muffy. Howie invented the name to insult her, and then backs her...half heartedly.

So there you have it. Half-hearted radio from a bunch of people programming an ideology to serve their true master - the almighty dollar. Don't expect "fair and balanced", or the truth, or anything but what they are told to dish out. Listen to little ToddTalk to hear how a soldier will do the bidding of his masters.

varulven...

As tired and trite as Rush seems to be....he obviously appeals to a few listeners? And radio stations must be making at least a couple bucks back on their investment during his 3 hour show? ???

Liberal VS Conservative hosts will probably be an-on-going commodity until talk shows are totally banned from the radio? [Don't laugh...this could happen depending upon who becomes our President in 2008!].

As for as the cost of ANY radio show....I think the investment is justifiable if the format takes a different spin...or is completely unique! Why do people still quote RUSH after so many years? Maybe it's because.....they LISTEN to him? Which means they either believe his opinions are right...or that he's just an escapee from a lunatic asylum? :p

Perhaps you are reading different media scripture than moi, but I don't see people quoting Rush as much as insulting him and making sport of his weight and his drug problems. His hypocrisy has reached new levels, as has Bill O'Reilly and Hannity, thus I see them caving in under their own misconduct eventually.

The sooner the better because it just isn't good radio or tv.

that being said, of course they make some money, but that has more to do with the Telecommunications Act
of 1996 and conglomerates being able to cut up the pie so neatly that they have enough sheep to satisfy
the sponsors/advertisers. Sad state of affairs.

Creativity is not wanted by those in control, though the public would like to have it. If a public isn't savvy enough to stop a stupid war, ya think they are going to fight for the airwaves the way we few will?

varulven...

I think your last paragraph sums up the current state of radio very well?

Creativity is not wanted by those in control, though the public would like to have it!

But complacency by the public in anything...whether it's the cost of buying a car, the fuel it runs on, or the insurance....WILL ALWAYS BE STRONGER THAN THE DEMAND FOR CHANGE!

It's easier for most people to mutter about, ridicule or curse someone out than actually look at the current rules and regulations when it comes to what broadcasters CAN & CAN'T DO? I'm sure some of the contributors to this...as well as other radio-info message boards...fall into this category?

He named her "Muffy" because she was blond. Howie also had disdain for Jane Swift, too. I've always thought he had a "woman" problem, which is why I've always called him "a knuckle-draggin' old man."

Argy, some of us actually roll up our shirtsleeves and do something about it. Some of the wanna be's will besmirch a man's hard work. For example, I'm speaking in front of the city council again this week to implement change in public access TV. I will go to the State House for a hearing against Verizon. I will write letters to the FCC and to the Attorney General's office to work for change. It isn't easy. The ACLU was shot down this week in regards to warrant-less wiretaps, but losing a battle doesn't mean it is the end of the war.

Anyone can open their mouth; few people can write a full report at the Mayor's request, fight the evil empire in multiple courts, and develop their own system while juggling all of the above.

Don't expect the majority to invest the time. Change has always come through one or two people - a
Ben Franklin or a Bill Gates. And the slings and arrows fly when one works hard for the greater good.
Just look at how I've been treated in this forum because I choose to reveal who I am.

But it's the MAJORITY that gets changes made!

There's more strength in NUMBERS than there is in a half dozen letters! :-*

What would happen if the majority of our population stopped paying their taxes (federal or state)....would they ALL get arrested? Or would a few of our stupid politicians suddenly wake up and say: [/i]"WE'VE GOT A PROBLEM!"[/i]

But as long as the "big boys" can buy out the little guys and put whatever bad and cheap ear candy they want on their radio stations...what do you listeners receive:

No accountability when it comes to programming or policy

Station owners just pay their fee
And that will satisfy the FCC!

Like so many others...even the commisioners can be BOUGHT! ::)
