Rush loses millions for Cumulus

MONDAY, MAY 7, 2012
The Rush Limbaugh protests cost Cumulus "a couple of million bucks" in Q1

CEO Lew Dickey tells the Cumulus quarterly call that the pullback by advertisers on Cumulus-owned stations that carry Rush amounted to about a 1% hit on its total revenue of roughly $245 million in the quarter. Dickey says the bite will be about the same in second quarter, but he says "June is pretty much back to normal." Cumulus uses the Premiere-syndicated Rush Limbaugh on 38 stations.

If Rush cost Cumulus four or five million in two quarters, and Limbaugh is on only 38 stations, how much has Premiere likely lost? Rush is on about 600 stations altogether.

Remember how Rush characterized this? He said business was up as much as 60 percent on his stations as a result of his attacks on Sandra Fluke!

I know in other markets Rush has been rumored to go to Merlin O&O's but in San Francisco Rush left Cumulus KSFO 560 and joined in with the ex-KGO am hosts to join in at KKSF 910 (Clear Channel Owned). Maybe CC will get him for other markets. I heard in some markets Huckabee has Rush's cumulus spot and in other places Cumulus will flip to follow the KGO "News and Information" format. This means all-news on the weekdays and local talk on the weekends.

...

OK, so they lost some money due to a "pullback from Limbaugh"

I'm going to say they're still better off with a pullback than what will happen with no Limbaugh at all. Come on people, use some common business sense here.

If he meant business at left-wing blogs, then he's right! :D

LOL! That's funny, but it is also likely true.

Here's Politico on Rush claiming gains from Fluke bashing (excerpt):

It’s no fluke: Rush claims ratings hike

One month after coming under fire for making offensive comments about law student Sandra Fluke, Rush Limbaugh boasted on Thursday that ratings for his popular radio show have gone up as much as 60 percent since his insults stirred a national controversy.

Limbaugh told listeners that he has been “peppered constantly” with the question: “What have your ratings been since that whole Fluke thing happened?”

Claiming he normally wouldn’t answer the question because of the “ethics of the broadcast business,” Limbaugh made an exception.

“The simple answer is that on the range of all 600 radio stations, our ratings are up anywhere from 10% to 60%, depending on the station.”

Limbaugh on Thursday gave a shout-out to the businesses that didn’t abandon his show, saying, “The advertisers who hung in here are going gangbusters, yes. I mean, that’s the simple truth. The only ones who got hurt are the ones who left.”

He continued, “And that’s its own tragedy because they left under false, trumped up, unreal pretenses. I don’t want to relive that. I just wanted to answer the question without getting too specific, because everybody’s asking about it.”

Rush advertises conservative websites...these websites in turn advertise some of the sponsers that dumped him.

Is anyone REALLY taking Cumulus at face-value here? Don't they have a... self-interest... in promoting the idea that Rush is hurting stations?

Or are you saying that Cumulus now has grounds to sue David Brock and Media Matters? ???
