Rush to KTRH, Sam to KPRC

This just in from KTRH/KPRC (from their official news release)

Effective Monday, December 18th @ 11am Rush Limbaugh will be your NEW,
11am-2pm, midday host on Newsradio 740 KTRH.

In a related story...the Sam Malone program, airing on Newsradio 740
KTRH, 10am-12noon, will move to 950 KPRC effective Monday, December
18th. (Sam will air from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays on KPRC)

Re: Rush to KTRH, Sam to KPRC...so much for objective radio news...

Makes for real objective NEWSradio...with Rush on KTRH and Fox hourly news on KPRC, KUHF is the only local objective news source on the dial...I'm still PO'd that they took MSNBC off of XM...

Does Sam at least get 10-11 off? I honestly don't know since I hardly venture to the fm side of the dial.

Probably, if it's in his contract! Otherwise, he's subject to the whims of managment, just like everyone else.

This makes KTRH as "NewsRadio" an even bigger joke. The only news now will be the morning newsblock and I wouldn't be surprised to see that go to a syndicated Talk Show in the near future. KTRH is down to a very bare bones news staff already, hardly enough to cover any stories. Clear Channel is certainly is not committed to covering the news in Houston.

The only company that covers news is CBS and KIKK is in not a good choice, especially this time of year when their hours are short, not to mention it is only 250 watts. I don't see CBS flipping KILT from Sports and both FM stations are doing well. The only hope is for CBS to buy an AM and I can only think of one supposedly for sale that might be upgraded to a good metro signal 24/7 and that is 1180 KGOL. The big question is CBS even interested in the expendature for an All News station?

Surprisingly Houston is not the largest Marjor Market without a fulltime News station, #5 D-FW does not have a fulltime News station and the other top Ten Market without a fulltime News station is #10 Atlanta. Other cities with fulltime News stations are #12 Detroit WWJ 950; #14 Seattle KOMO 1000; #23 Pittsburgh KQV 1410 and #53 Buffalo WNED 970. I did not include CNN Headline News stations.

I would sure like to see a company start a fulltime News station in Houston on a frequency that has good metro coverage. Other than CBS I don't know who and CBS is selling off so many stations that they may just sell them all before long and get out of thr radio business. The other problem is there are very few good coverage AM's in Houston and Clear Channel and CBS own the best.

Not terribly surprised to see this happen. I predicted over two years ago that it was a possibility, not long after Debra Duncan's talk show premiered. Why waste Big Pharma on an inferior stick?

And yeah, keeping the "Newsradio" moniker is a joke...but Houston's not the only Clear Channel "Newsradio" branded station to be all news. WTAM-1100-Cleveland, WFLA-970-Tampa are only two of many stations that brand as "Newsradio" but are anything but.

I can't find this "news" on either the KTRH or KPRC web site, nor in the Chronicle.

If true, it seems like this reverses the trend of moving the local talk shows (Chris Baker, for example) from KPRC to KTRH.

This cuts Joe Pags to an hour long show, and gives Tom Martino two hours in the morning?

Or are the moves not yet over? Is Baker staying in Houston?

Stan, I don't know why it hasn't been reported elsewhere, but the news came from an e-mail sent by the Houston CC sales department to a number of ad agencies that buy time on their stations.

They running promos on both stations, so I guess it's not news anymore. I wish they'd put ALL my favorite shows on 740, since 950 has such a suck signal. Move Savage to KTRH! Move the "High Tech Texan" to another city altogether, if a compelling local talent can't be found.

AMEN to that last post. What is the deal with Garfield having a M-F talk show? I listened for a couple of minutes this morning and he was attempting politics, unsuccessfully mind you. He talks too fast, to many "ums" and "uhos" and doesn't seem to grasp the topic, not to mention his horrible radio voice. I thought he was just a technology guy. He comes off to me as a self serving promotional hound for himself. I don't know the guy, never met him, but this is how he comes off on air to me. Am I the only person that sees Garfield in this light?

I thought it was just me being too critical as well. His tech show is ok but he seems so totally out of his league with the daily chat about other subjects such as politics, immigration, or whatever. It's funny how the tech talk creeps back in to a topic when he starts to struggle. I am not sure what they were thinking. Maybe Randy Lemmon can have the next new show...

Do they still call 740 "NewsRadio?" It seems it's all talk now...

Airwave, you'r'e not alone. Garfield is a rank amateur as far as talk goes. Even in the tech arena, I have a hard time listening to him. His arrogance and lack of radio voice, as you say airwave, not only makes hard to listen to, but makes him hard to like. I tried to listen to his show for a few minutes this week and he was obviously uncomfortable in a general talker mode. I noticed too that he seems to gravitate back to tech when the going gets tough. I seriously doubt we're listening to the next Rush Limbaugh. By the way what did he ever do to "earn" the title "High Tech Texan"?

well IIRC...he did a call-in with Steve Robison on the Morning Buzz show.
Cheap Channel liked him so much he went to all the other CC stations. and now, 10 years later, he has experience to do talk radio. ::)

I wonder if Rush thinks this is a good move? Will the huge numbers he had on KPRC follow him over to KTRH? I will be interested to see how the numbers look in the next book.

Someone told me the other day that KLVI is rumored to be removing Rush after the first of the year, as KTRH has Rush on a station that covers all of southeast Texas. As for what will replace Rush, there was no response, just some comment about some other syndicated show(s) being considered. Hopefully not back to the days of Chuck Harder or G. Gordon Liddy.
