Russ Martin is gone!!!!

Russ.... When your money and blow run out start practicing these words over and over:

Do you want fries with that? :D See ya in hell partner

Russ might be gone, but he is not forgotten..
He will pop back up on another station in time..
Russ is like the phoenix he will rise from the dead!! :D

He might, but then he might not.

Russ had a huge 7 figure payday at Live 105. In today’s radio climate, what company is going to pay out that kind of cash? Add to that Russ' play it by his own rules attitude, his inability to play nice with other shows on the same station, his burned bridges, lack of respect for management, legal troubles, problems with the IRS, drinking on the air, professed prescription drug abuse, severe drop in ratings over the last couple of years, refusal to do personal appearances or will only do them for outrageous fees, and the list goes on and on.

Take all that in a single package, versus hiring the hot new voice that’s hungry for success willing to work for next to nothing to get his foot in the door.

If you were an owner/manager, which would you go with?

But, then again it’s possible there is another Gavin Spittle out there willing to take that chance for some momentary gain.
Idiots seem to rise to the top in this business every day.

I agree, but where? Only time will tell.

There are rare people who can command a min. seven figures for on air work in this day and age(Stern, Limbaugh, ect..), but those folks have earned it by working bushleague jobs from the beginning and doing the worst shifts you can imagine in the lowest markets out there, not to mention put in public appearances and made their name a viable brand, those folks earned the right to make their money. Russ, IMHO did not. He basically coat-tailed it into the market and got lucky, he never pulled a 12-5a sat-wed and every third thursday in Pigsknuckle, Arkansas or worked o/t in promotions to make ends meet. He did TV, but he barely did anything except standups and schtick work, never anything really of substance. His idea of radio was barely getting by, never digging deep into himself to make a better product. Promotions, he only did appearances that would pay him high figures and nothing less, while other members of his radio team, esp. much maligned sidekick JD Ryan, did this consistantly for scale rate. His ideas of charity were more an attempt to make himself look good, not help people or animals, I have it on good standing that his board position at OK was just another status symbol for him.

If it sounds as if I lack sympathy for russ, I do. Theres far better people in this business and others barely getting by who have more dedication, heart and talent to out perform him. If he wants to be employed again, I suggest he take do a little bit of soul searching and get his life in order accordingly.

Slambang I think your missing something form Russ' career. He jocked during the 80's DOING appearances. He worked graveyard at the satellite network. I don't think working in Tyler is a major market so he didn't just walk into DFW and get a gig. Also, I cant think of ANY board op that wouldn't jump at the chance to do on air in the mornings when the syndicated show(Stern) left, if given the chance. The Eagle needed a replacement and Russ had on air experience. Why not have a local talent that had marketability. I'm starting(kinda already knew it) to think that A LOT of people on this board are just bitter that a guy like Russ actually had success. Hey, and if his advertisers want to pay the kind of cash that it required to be a sponsor of his show, then that's their deal. We all know that this industry is dog eat dog. Last I checked Limbaugh hasn't done an appearance in a long time and Stern's appearances aren't cheap, I'm sure.

I believe you've made a very good synopsis of Russ. What gained him "fame" eventually ruined him. He has a couple of years of his contract to revel in and should be thankful for that. As it is, he's likely attempting some underhanded move to seek revenge and place himself in the spotlight again. Sad that.

I'm looking at Sirius units right now. If he goes I'm definitely getting on board.

Im still standing by what I said, the guy got karma biting him in the a$$ for what he pulled with people. Maybe he can pull a scott sams, go to sherman/denison and work out his demons there....

This just in from Richie Whitt on his Dallas Observer blog...

As I heard on Monday, management at Live 105.3 105.3 The Fan has not only fired controversial/comment-creating (350? You shittin' me?) Russ Martin but also agreed to pay him through 2011 just to keep his ass off another local station. Confirmed by Russ here.

I also hear a previously planned Russ Martin Show Band gig at Joe Avezzano's joint up in Frisco on Dec. 19 may blossom into an explosive 105.3 protest, so stay tuned.

And I'm sure that fun little event will attract lots of message board folk. Bring your laptops and live-blog it for us.

Tyler??? Do you mean Terrell? He worked with us at KTLR-FM there and went on to KAAM when it was at 1310. From there I think he jumped to the Eagle. I'm sure Shannon knows the timeline abit better.

OK Terrell. I knew it was one of those s-hole towns out that way. Get over it. I never heard him speak of KTLR, but he spoke of KAAM a lot on the air. My response wasn't to be a resume of fact in a timeline matter. It was to prove a point that Slambang made that he didnt work in crap markets before coming to DFW.
