I've been a resident of the DFW area for the past 11 years. I've lived in different areas of the country, like Seattle , and ther cities and I'm originally fro Ohio. Radio is a passion of mine and I have listened to a lot of it over the years. But Dallas radio is odd. With the exception of 1310 The Ticket, is just is pretty bland. That's why when someone like Russ comes along , he stands out. Is he original? No even close. He was just able to garner a loyal audience and win the popularity vote during the diary era. When the PPM's came in, that's when you really saw what his appeal as. And this isn't a knock on him, I put many of the " high profile" personalities in the same category. All I can say is that's a good thing Howard Stern didn't have to be measured by the PPM back in the beginning of his career. I'll venture to say that he'd be successfull, but not even in the same arena of where he is today. he'd probably be a local star in a market and his popularity would be a fraction of what it became. He actually may have only lasted 10 yeras with PPM and radio companies lack of patience .What the PPM's have shown is that listeners don't really listen to personalities for long periods of time like we thought with the diary system. All of these male oriented rock radio million dollar talents should thank their lucky stars that arbitron didn't come up with PPM 30 years ago.
