Now hang on a minute. The omniscient and unbiased Al Brumley reported once that Russ was making a 7-figure salary. Suppose that included what was past the decimal point? Then again, I heard from one radio vet that Russ's show bills $17 mil a year, which would make a $1 mil salary a drop in the bucket. (I guess I never realized that The Men's Club had a $17 mil annual ad budget.)
But it's the same M.O., same crap. He'll be back. It's just an excuse for more vacation time, and to milk it for attention and to make sure his show isn't displaced in the spotlight with all the attention centered on DLR this week. But who else would take Martin around here, and on his terms? Austin didn't work out, and neither would any other market. His strength is his localism. Satellite for Russ would be a joke. He needs this market as much as it supposedly needs him, and that takes away a LOT of Martin's bargaining power. I can't see CC, Susquehanna, ABC or anyone else cowing down to Martin's "demands," let alone risking FCC fines over a loose cannon.
Considering the new lean-and-mean approach of this "new" CBS division, I wouldn't be surprised if Martin was asked to take a pay cut. You can bet that Ken Barnett walked for that very same reason. I'd guess that the first thing the new CBS did was to pull up a list of all full-time employees making over $50K a year, and to pick that list apart to see who was really expendable. When there's an inexperienced kid waiting in the wings who'll do the same job for 1/10th the salary, it's an easy guess as to who will get the job these days.
