Hang on folks...1360 is NOT a "pay" station. Now my deal with them was worked out long ago directly with the local management of KMNY, and, fortunately, the Rational Radio folks let me keep my timeslot, gratis, after they started leasing the airtime fulltime in July, 2008.
However, I do know one person who was approached a while back about doing a local morning show there (which, in hindsight, would have been a perfect match with P&K and BDH) and was told that he would have to sell his OWN spots for his own program, and that would be his compensation. That's not the same thing as paying for airtime. Sure, the station gets to sell a few spots for one's show as well, but the airtime is free (but you're not paid anything, either) BUT you do get to sell spots and keep the revenue. I know that's not the same thing as drawing a paycheck, either, but the owner's sunk a lot of cash into Rational Radio, and I don't blame him a bit for working out deals that don't require a financial commitment...and apparently it was worth the tradeoff for both sides (assuming that's how the deals were worked for P&K and BDH) to do it that way.
So no, you can dispel the myth that any of these folks are paying for time. Now on the weekends, sure, I'd bet there are several one-hour 'infomercial'-type programs that pay for airtime. When I produced at BizRadio 1360, individual interests were paying around $650 per hour for a weekly one-hour block (and we had NO ratings then.) THAT'S the money that keeps a lot of AM's afloat these days, and pays for their weekday schedules. Listen to KAAM on the weekends sometimes and hear the wall-to-wall cruise/travel infomercials. Egad.
And Liberty, don't "diss" 1360...if it wasn't for them, there never would have been a "Hi-Fi Club"!
