And as I have said many times before, he isn't coming back to air again, at least not in this market anyway.

Yes we know you have said it many times and that doesn't make it any more true. He will be back on air in this market and then what will you do? Oh same thing you do now. Piss and moan.

I notice how you completely skipped over my question of would you hire Russ if you could. So who's gonna hire him in this market? Forget KEGL, like CC would have put him on the air there to begin with. We can also rule out CBS, obviously. Cumulus...? I wonder which of those stations would even consider hiring Russ.

Russ will not be back in DFW because of the simple fact that he let his fame get to him and wound up getting arrested for a serious crime. Even if he squeaks by the judicial system, he's damaged his chances of ever working in this market agaain. He's too much of a risk PR wise, and who wants to pay him 7 figures? In this economy?

Some of you must not have business management and PR experience on your resume.

He is a proven money maker in this market. He will be back. You can deny it all you want. You can close your eyes, throw yourself on the floor and have a raging fit if you like but that won't stop him from being back on air in this market.

Lets keep beating a dead horse. There is no company that is going to hire Russ right now. These companies are axing everybody that makes big bucks. Trust me, Russ is done..finished!!!!

Well, thank GOD. I was just writhing and hurling myself into the wall and gnarling and gnashing my teeth and having what my late shrink called a "temper tantrum." (Don't ask why he's my LATE shrink. I was acquitted, though.) I was about to launch into an attack of Tourette's, followed by some projectile vomiting, and had planned to take a salad fork and put both eyes out, then ram my left hand down the garbage disposal after I hooked it up to the clothes dryer plug (220V makes it go REAL fast.) I'm ok now. But I could sure use some sheetrock and some large band-aids right now. Can somebody drive me back to the "home for the occasionally sane" now? Damn that Russell Martin.

"Turd." That's actually kinda funny.

I'll admit it - I guffawed a bit at that.

220...221...whatever it takes.

At the risk of getting flamed, I'm not sure I buy your argument.

If someone could get RM on a "I really need to rehab my image and prove I still have it" type of contract, might they not roll the dice?

And isn't selling off prized collectables a sign of someone willing to accept less compensation?

I've never worked in radio, but in every other line of work I've been in or that I've had friends in, people with big egos would rather work on the cheap and prove their critics wrong than fade away in disgrace. And Russ Martin, what ever else he may be, is a man with a huge ego.

But again, maybe the logic I'm using doesn't apply in the radio biz.

I won't say he'll never work in this town again, but I think the comment above about 'right now' is on the money. The story I was told is that the reason they finally pulled the plug on his show was that he was costing them advertisers. So the comments above from "Turd Ferguson" about him being a money maker aren't quite so accurate. He WAS a moneymaker. Now he is a liability.

When they pulled the show, the RMS was, if I remember correctly, 6th or 8th in Men 25-54. (Either Jagger was 8th and Russ 6th or vice-versa). Not the #1 he was a few years ago, but still respectable, and still a sellable rating in a desired demographic. (i.e there's a lot of advertisers who target men aged 25-54, and will spend money on stations that do well in that age group).

If he was 6th (or even 8th) and billing what he 'should' be billing, there's no reason to take him off the air. But if the story I was told is correct, and advertisers were shying away from his show, the decision to dump his show suddenly makes a lot more sense.

Especially when you consider how much Russ was supposedly making and how many people they had on that show. Take Russ's supposed salary, add in X amount for JD, X for a board op (Clo?), X for the producer, X for a traffic reporter, etc etc... Easy to justify all those salaries when they had the ratings (#1 or #2) of a few years back. Harder to justify those salaries when the ratings and corresponding revenue aren't the same...

Sorry, took a couple of calls...
So while Russ may be willing to take a cut in pay, will he be able to pull a Blues Brothers and put the band back together? A station may be willing to take a chance on Russ once his legal issues are cleared up, but what will JD be doing a year from now, etc etc. And will the show be the same with a different supporting cast?

OK, that makes a great deal of sense. Thanks for the insight.

Dunno...I think about Stern without Jackie and Billy West. Yeah, the show still pushes on, but it's just not what it once was.

Or about the "New Dick Van Dyke Show," "The New Perry Mason," "Make Room for Granddaddy," "The New WKRP in Cincinnati," "Ozzie's Girls," etc etc etc...all one-season losers...lightning never seems to strike twice.

That's also the idea behind non-competes--that you'll be insignificant, forgotten, irrelevent and a non-issue by the time you sit it out. Now surely that would never happen in THIS case....right?

I was going to go there, but figured I'd posted enough at that time. But you make a very good point. There was an article in one of the trades a few years back that pointed out that Howard's hey-day in terrestrial radio was when it was just him, Robin, jackie, gary, and the SFX/engineer guy who's name is slipping my mind. And it was the battles between them that got them great ratings: howard attacking bababoey, Howard and Bababoey picking on jackie, howard and robin bitching at Gary, etc.

Once they started dragging in more and more secondary and even tertiary characters, it became less about the characters that everybody liked, and more about the circus. Stuttering John, The Cabbie, this intern, that caller, it became less about Howard, Jackie, gary, etc... and more about people who listeners didn't have the same emotional attachment to.

Which circling back to Russ, will people still care about him a year or 2 down the line the same way they do/did care about him now. Will the same schtick work then? For example, attacking Gavin for stupid programming decisions- will he be able to attack the PD of whatever station he gets hired at in the same way? I'm thinking probably not, makes him look stupid for going to work for a guy he doesn't respect (as opposed to them promoting someone he didn't respect into a position over him)

IF Rus does get back on the iar, I would like to know the IQ( or lack of ) of the GM/PD who made that decision. What is done IS DONE. Bo and Jim have been restrcited since their q102 days and lack that appeal that once had ,many many listeners. Its over folks. Russ is part of DFW radio HISTORY.
