Russ Ragan killed in plane crash

Today we all recieved some bad news, one of our own has passed, he was a true friend and will be missed by all in the wiregrass broadcasting family, here's to you my friend and i will still have that Ted Nugent night in your honor, Good bye "Crab Man" we love you!

Russ was a great guy...a real straight shooter. I was lucky enough to work with Russ for many years on many stations. He was always a professional. I will miss him.

Dave Gilligan

I remember early mornings on the 8th floor and Russ telling me about taking flying lessons.
As a licensed pilot myself, I could relate to his excitement and enthusiasm for flying.
He fell in love with it and had a true passion for it.
It is sad we lost him today, but we can take solace in he died doing what he loved.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Russ Regan loved Alabama football and was thrilled about the upcoming season.
He loved flying and had flown to a game or two last year. He was looking forward
to combining his two loves and flying off to see the Tide again this season.
He always wondered if we could hear him screaming through the woods when
he was at home on game day. We could and still can.

Damn.

You'll be missed. So long friend.

I was honored to have worked with Russ for a brief period and my only regret was that we didn't get to work together longer. Russ was a man who followed his heart and was a true friend, as well as a great talent.

There are NO words that can even begin to express how much sorrow we feel with our loss of Russ Reagan today. In radio, we all are part of a unique family and it is truely a loss for all anytime we lose a fellow broadcaster. WTVY has been blessed to have Russ as a part of our family for many years...we will miss him dearly. Russ knew NO fear....he loved living life. Our hearts will hold the memory of Russ and the tradition of the Reagan family forever. Russ, thankyou for everything you have been a part of at WTVY....thankyou for your loyalty, your dedication and the never fading smiles that you gave us everyday. We will miss you and we will never forget you.

Like most here, my path in radio crossed Russ's.
Of this I am glad. And in the words of Norm Boswell:
Hey Brother....Roll Tide!

I worked with Russ at WULA/K-93 in Eufaula in 1983, and again at WRJM/Troy in 1986, and - almost - at WLWI-AM/Montgomery. We kept in touch for quite a few years, but sadly for me, I hadn't talked to him in a while. He and I used to catch up when I was in Panama City; he and his "entourage" would spend a few days at Charles Woods' condo on the beach, courtesy of Mr. Gene, and we'd go out to dinner and talk radio all night, much to the chagrin of the ladies in the crowd. Sorry, you can't get a bunch of radio geeks together without the subject at least coming up once.

Rest in peace, Russell.

My sympathies to his family and closest friends.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Russ for many years. What always impressed me about Russ was his work ethic. It was second to none. He was always there, always on time, always loaded down with more information than any 10 people would ever need. And he loved it. I will never, ever forget the morning he tried to explain pork bellies to me. He knew the whole time he was talking right over my head, but he trudged right through it until he thought I had it. And as always, he did it with a mile wide grin. I'll also never forget the week he asked me to fill in for him on the Ragan Report while he took a well-deserved vacation. Truth be told, I was horrified, but the man handed me a script for each day of the week. Thanks to him, I was able to discuss topics I knew less than nothing about and sound reasonably intelligent. Even pork bellies.

I didn't really know Russ that well outside of work, but I do know that he was fiercely dedicated to his family, to his audience, and to the Tide.

Of this I have no doubt: Starting Friday, July 27th, when the sun rises over the wiregrass each morning, it will be a little dimmer than it ever has been.

Farewell, Russ. You were one of the good ones.

Tonight, the Big Dog paid tribute to Russ onstage at Cowboys. [EDIT] Big Dog dudes...you are a class act.

Godspeed, Russ - we'll miss you very badly. :'(

When I was at the station at Noon and heard the news about Russ I could not believe it. I don't remember how or where we met but from that point on if he saw me out he would always make it a point to come up to me and speak to me and have nothing but nice things to say about anyone you asked him about. I was doing a blood drive last Friday at Wal-mart and even saw him then going through the DVD'S. I would never even dare to bring up Auburn Football around him because I knew he was such a huge fan.
Russ and his Dad meant alot to the farming community around here it was radio/t.v. at it best.

Russ you will be missed my Brotha

I have known Russ for over 25 years.I talked to him a few months ago.we worked together back in the late 80's at WOOF-FM.The funny story I shared on the air this morning His Radio 94.3 was one Saturday he was coming up after my shift and he walks in with a small black and white tv.You have to understand this was before Radio stations had cable in the control room.So he puts the tv on the counter and starts adjusting the rabbit ears.I asked what are you doing?Russ replies"Alabama is on tv today and I am not missing the game.A diehard Alabama fan.We will miss you Russ.

Like most of you have said, Russ was a great guy! I have worked with him since I was a kid. He was always very nice and in good spirits. My favorite memory of him was about 2 years ago. We had a company party in Panama City where we were all drinking and cutting up. Then out of nowhere Russ grabbed the microphone and started singing "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and playing the air guitar. IT WAS HILARIOUS!!!!

He will definately be missed by all. ROLL TIDE

Russ was a great person! I had the pleasure of meeting Russ in July 1981 when I came to Dothan to work at AM-56 (WOOF-AM). He was doing middays and was always willing to give me pointers on where I should look for housing and explained Max McGowan to me! Russ we will miss you!

"Wild Bill" Camarata aka: "Bill Bailey"

I met Russ back in the early to mid 80's working at the old WLHQ in Enterprise. Later he was working at the old US100 and I was just starting there. Then at WTVY when he was leaving to go full time with his dad, I was his replacement on the air. From then on he always jokingly told everyone that he quit those jobs so that I could get employed. And everytime I saw him his first response was (in his best Elvis voice) "Hey Elvis!...how's Priscilla". That's 3 good friends that I've lost from WTVY in the last 6 years...Shane Deese, Oscar Lanman and now Russ. Shane and Russ to plane crashes. Still miss Shane tremndously and now Russ too.
Well see you on the other side.

I never got a chance to meet him but i have heard for years about what a great man he was on and off the air. I did listen to Russ while he was in Oxford and he was a great talent . Russ , we will miss you and just as so many have posted the following.....ROLL TIDE ROLL !!
I pray for his entire family at this time.
