Rusty Fender/Shadoe Steele

The rumor on the street is he was fired for cost-cutting measures. I don't have any confirmation of this, but it would make sense. He was working there for over 25 years and had to collect a larger salary.

He was one of Entercom's most dedicated employees. In addition to the traffic reports, he hosted a Saturday night oldies program and a Sunday morning public affairs program. Anyone remember the last time he took a day off?

It seems someone named "OD" is doing traffic on Froggy and KRZ, and Joe Thomas did traffic on WILK today.

Does anybody have any details?

Are they serious?! I guess you know what happens to talented, dedicated, loyal employees. They get chopped, like Phil G. from WARM last year. Shadoe was a very genuine guy. I grew up listening to his oldies show that was once on KRZ and even saw him on WBRE doing traffic. No, I don't ever remember him taking a day off. I never imagined he would be gone from the Entercom cluster, that man practically held those places together.

No doubt Dale is a hard worker, but doing what? Reading Penndot releases, doing an oldies show with a disappearing audience, a public affairs show where he talks more than the guests?

I don't want to be insensitive to someone who lost a job. Unfortunately, that's business.

He was fired before back in around 1992 - 1995? He was fired back then for shoplifting and it was on the WYOU 22 news. Entercom hired him back. My thoughts are that Entercom should have not hired him back.

Wow. Well, he definitely did a lot for the stations, but as traffic reporter it was pretty awful...especially in the afternoons. Singing songs on-air with Jeff Walker on WKRZ, or taking up 20 minutes an hour on WILK with Corbett talking about absolute nonsense (and singing too). Some banter is OK, but lately it was way over the line. WILK is supposed to be talking about news, but instead the focus was on pizza...and (during Sandy) dropping Nuclear weapons on the town of Laflin. Not having the distraction will be better for Steve as well.

Yes, there are some dinosaurs at KRZ that have overstayed their welcome that maybe should have been targeted first...but I guess that's how it goes. WILK's programming schedule is blank for Saturday nights...so no more oldies show, I guess...Then again, that really lost its touch when it went off KRZ. Shadoe interviewing artists (doing both the questions and answers, and the guest only having to say yes or no) took over the show, and going for music was more difficult.

Oh well, if true, the best to Rusty/Shadoe...he's a genius that is certainly able to land a far better opportunity in his original field.

i read the story in the leader. it failed to mention that he also worked at jim wards station, ward, back, i believe in the 80s or 90s. he did a polka show with jolly scott, and brunon kryger. ward let him go for an unknown reason. he went on the air as dale micheals back then.

That be me :) We had a blast back then and Dale was creative and witty as always. I hope things work out for him.

From his Facebook:

"Good luck with the 'new breed' of part time, traffic reporters! One of the 'broadcast' courses I teach at Wilkes deals with 'payola' and Program Directors who sleep with label reps for playlist 'adds', I think I'll follow this up with a friend at the Department of Justice ASAP!"

Something tells me that this isn't over....

at least dale (rusty fender) speaks english, and has a good delivery on the air.. now, the part timer, and the female they have doing the traffic....well im not going to say it.. the talk shows are --- ..the news this morning, well again,i wont say it. it seems like corprate always fires the employee who give them 100%. and keeps the people who shouldnt even think about doing radio..and the sad thing is, i went up and down the dial..am and fm, and cant find one single station worth listning too. and thats a shame..

Way to go. Stay classy, Rusty.

I did not see the above quote on Rusty's or Shadoe's FB page. I find it curious though, there is relatively little information on what really happened.
