'RVR Solid Gold Sunday Question...

We started our "Count-Off" of former SGS'ers on this board.
I forget which thread it's on...
I remember 3.

Let's start again...If you've EVER done (even once) a "Solid Gold Sunday" on WRVR...count off.

I'll start again...."ONE"

(I was there for a while in the early 90's, and I cannot recall when it stopped. How long did it run?- Rob? Anyone?) ;D

"Two!" I know I was doing it as late as 2000, but that may have been the end of the line.

Four here... Worked those Sundays in 1998, and 1999... CFKane

I did SGS occasionally during my tenure there....I remember when WOTO came on the air, there were discussions as to how long we'd keep SGS. We kept it for a while, but it finally bit the dust in March (I think) of 2000. AC was definitely in a state of flux...because many had forsaken the 'oldies' to be more 'hip' and go for younger demos. Of course, when Entercom came in...the whole idea of a 'hip' mainstream AC really took off. Had we not eliminated SGS when we did, I'm sure Entercom would have done away with it at some point.

Kay Manley

Six!

I did my turn from 1998 until the end.....

The ironic part is, we didn't get to start talking over the intros until AFTER Solid Gold Sunday came to an end. Joel Burke asked my brother, Jeff, who was the Promotion Director at Froggy at the time, if he thought I would stay if I got to talk over the intros, and of course, I did.

We couldn't talk over kick butt intros like The Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", but a few days after the death nail of SGS we were talking over the intro for "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" - Michael Bolton. ::)

Fortunately, I had the opportunity to talk over LOTS of oldies at Oldies 98 many years ago.

Dave Clark

In the several years I did it...I DID talk over some intros ANYWAY!
(Not that I didn't hear about it anyway)
There are some songs like "Smoke From A Distant Fire" by the Sanford- Townsend Band that simply HAD to be talked over. On a good weekend Joel nor Kay either one heard it! ;D

Good to see all of you former solid gold sunday folks. I was there for the beginning of those sundays and at the time I thought it was a bad idea and wouldn't last long. You can see why I never made it as a programmer. For those that have some grey in their hair they will remember it was Jim Robertson who came up with the idea and it was born out of desperation. In those days we were trying to catch FM 100 and we almost had them but we would get killed on the weekends. So hence, trying something new on sunday to attract listeners. I remember it being a hit almost from the start and it was alotta fun pulling the sunday morning shift, although more than once i went in alittle hung over, ah those were the days.

This is how old I'm getting--I'm trying to remember whether I did or not.

Now, I was up there on more than a couple of Sundays, and remember being on-air a time or two for the Frog, but whether or not I ran the RVR SGS... Meep, Kay, Mr. Kane, help my failing memory, please!

Ladies and gentlemen, Ken Kincaid...who punked me out with one of the simplest but most effective practical jokes that have ever been pulled on me....and that I remember even though it happened over 25 years ago. Do you Ken?

Tom (TJ) Conners (Nichols)

I'm always game for a good practical joke....why don't you tell us about it?

It was probably the oldest practical joke in the radio book, but anyway…

When you’re standing at the board at WRVR, you’re looking into the news booth. If the booth is dark, you can see behind you. It was about 5:50 on a Sunday PM. Ken was on the air and I was pulling carts from the wall racks behind him for the 6-Mid shift. I heard the mic click on and the speakers mute, so I quieted down. Then Ken says:

“104 WRVR Solid Gold Sundays…that’s Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, and if you don’t like it you can go **** yourself”

That’s probably been done to countless jocks over the years, but it took me completely off guard and I fell for it all the way. I spun around, Ken saw my expression in the window reflection, and since the song was now fading for real he had to do the real break. I think he got out the call letters and that’s all before he broke up. That was his last break of the shift, and it’s a good thing. I’m also glad we had a recorded top of the hour jingle, since I was unable to do a break for about 10 minutes myself.

Simple, but effective, and I’ve remembered it all these years.

The classic "Microphone in audition" joke is funny!
But you gotta catch somebody early in their career.
It is much akin to "Pallet Stretchers" and "Skyhooks" and the like-outside of radio.
;D

Tom, it is good to see you and I hope all is well in your world. I had forgotten about that joke, but we did have some fun in those days. That is the kind of joke that you check one, twice and maybe fifty times to make sure you have it in audition. It would be great to get everyone together from over the years and have a beer or two.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I remember Solid Gold Sunday's pulling some huge numbers.

Well, I was there from the very beginning and it was a hell of a lot of fun! At least until Joel arrived. ;D Good to see ya on here Ken! You too Meep. Kane, if you don't call me soon, I will come to Louisiana and open up a can on your *ss!

Nice to see you here, Bill. My new station here in Birmingham is pretty much SGS all the time... the best of the '60s and '70s. As soon as we start streaming, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

And yes, I'm up far too late.

Bill, you didn't log out and I've had no luck trying to log in and post so thanks Bill for letting me borrow your domain for just a second. A big hello to all SGS veterans (and everyone else too). I have lots of SGS memories but I guess one that stands out is getting to play "Stairway to Heaven" (unedited) on WRVR. I think I dropped 4 or 5 songs to make sure I had time to play it, and I never saw it on the log again.

Merry Christmas

My personal fave was always "Let it all hang out" By the Hombres. Just for kicks I still play 3 dog night every now and then during Noon Toons.

Bill, good to see you and I hope you are doing well. As I was reading yours and other posts about solid gold sundays, I was thinking that the studios have been there quite a few years now. It just seems like yesterday when we moved from central avenue out east. I dont know what they are doing with our old building, but I do know that the old WDIA building is a day care center for dogs. There might be a joke or two in there but I am trying to take the high ground now a days.
