RXP almost sounding like (gulp) an alternative station

Noticed that RXP has been improving a lot recently and they've been sounding (almost) like an alternative station. Of course, their sets are often interrupted by unnecessary classic rock cuts that don't fit at all (Tom Petty, AC/DC, Beatles, David Bowie, etc.) but it's progress. I think once they weed out music we can already here on Q, they'll finally have a unique voice in this city.

Welll...of those, I'd argue in favor of Bowie and a *smidgen* of Beatles. (WLIR pre-'87 played both.)

They've gotta lose all Aerosmith, though, save for the Toys In The Attic album.

Lots of improving but improving there very, very bad sound quality of there livestream not yet. My god, it's unlistenable. I wonder if the station get time for it to improve this before it flips...

It better have time to improve before it flips. It's gotta really promote itself and get rid of all those classic rock songs. They need to also need to have more commercial free hours or at least have them to compete with Q and DHA in NJ. They need to not make it sound like giant train wreck and not put so much of the same artists on. add some artists like fall out boy, panic! at the disco, 30 seconds to mars, breaking benjamin, 311, 10 years, shinedown, stone sour, red jumpsuit apparatus, nickelback (probably not a good idea haha), jack's mannequin, jet, linkin park, my chemical romance

Agreed, 'RXP seems to beating all the big '90s bands to death, while nearly all of the "new" songs that they play are either new songs by '90s bands, or for lack of a better description- "weird" indie songs by bands that are virtually unknown to a good deal of rock fans. While I am not a fan of all of the bands on XCountry285's list, it is clear that bands like those are more well-known and it wouldn't hurt 'RXP to see if playing those bands in place of a classic rock or indie tune would slow down the tuneout factor.

Virtually all of the bands you cite, with the exception of My Chemical Romance, should belong
almost exclusively to Top 40 or Hot AC radio, *not* alt-rock radio!

I agree that Bowie fits. And they don't seem to have Aerosmith or The Beatles in regular rotation anymore. But Tom Petty and AC/DC should definitely go.

I disagree. I think the last thing they need is more post-grunge or pop-punk. I think these are the bands that turned a lot of people off from modern rock radio. I'm fine with them playing 311, 30 Seconds To Mars, My Chemical Romance, Jack's Mannequin, and maybe Jet and Linkin Park. But the rest should stay off RXP.

Above all though, I think RXP sounds way too safe these days. Their playlist mostly just seems to consist of the 500 best-testing rock songs of the last 30-35 years. And I think the ratings show that this is not what their desired audience wants. Perhaps familiar songs need to be the core of the station, but there need to be enough "oh wow" songs to keep it interesting. And a bit more new music wouldn't hurt either.

Will 'RXP ever try to be an active rock station (specializing in harder rock ala WCCC in Hartford) or a full-blown modern rock station (with *NOTHING* released before 1990). 'RXP has slowly been changing their sound, while never opening the playlist up, eschewing almost all hard rock, and continuing to play a handful of Tom Petty, the Black Crowes, and G'N'R songs that get played to death on Q104.

The (gulp) in the title of the thread means you've been drinking?

because clearly something is imparing your senses if you think RXP is alternative. Give WFNX a listen on their stream and then tell me RXP, or even K-Rock HD sounds alternative.

Does this station ever catch a break? It seems neither fish nor fowl. It seems damn near impossible to program Alternative to Men 18-34 in Market #1. Does this demo still listen to music radio in the first place? Thought they all were plugged into their guyPods because radio plays too many commercials and the music sucks. What remains of the fan-listener base is never satisfied. Understandably so, it's the nature of the demo. Too much post grunge, not enough post grunge; too much grunge, not enough grunge; jocks talk too much, jocks never say anything worth listening to; too much classic rock, not enough classic rock; too much west coast alt, not enough west coast alt; need more indy bands, too many indy bands; too many hits, not familiar enough. Might be best to blow it up and go all sports.

That whole message was frightening. I wouldn't want RXP to sound like either of those choices stated. Drop the classic rock, add classic alternative, then we have a starting point for a truly interesting station and open up the library instantly.

it'd be such a waste to blow up RXP for sports. Sports to me belongs on AM not FM.

AM is dying. And will be dead in less than 20 years. Get over it. (And I'm being generous here).

Sports is migrating to FM in markets large and small. Most NFL teams broadcast their games on FM. New York may be one of the last markets where this happens, but it will happen eventually. :)

Agreed with Brooklyndon, go more for an FNX type sound and ditch the classic rock stuff

I wish Radio wasn't going away. It's just because ppl aren't buying HD radios b/c their signals are crap.

Oh great, another HD Radio apologist. HD signals being crap is only one part of the problem -- maybe if there was appealing content on HD side-channels and the marketing campaign for HD Radio hadn't been done so poorly and the technology was freely available in more cars & devices... then maybe on top of all that, if the signals were better, HD Radio might succeed.

As far as radio listening dropping, the industry has only itself to blame on that one. If you build it, they will come. Invest in your product, make it as compelling and entertaining as you can, give people a reason to listen and connect with what you're broadcasting (beyond just giving away cash). HD Radio shouldn't be the solution -- fix the content on your main signal before you start affixing needless bells and whistles to it. Boring content still sounds boring, even when it's in "crystal-clear HD sound."
