RXP DEATH WATCH

Their PPM rating (.9) was just barely above Lite's stream (.5).

They're giving away 1,000 tickets in 31 days to see bands that no one (or at least the majority of listeners in the tri-state area) cares about.

Media buyers won't take their calls.

Any takers on how much life is left in the heaping pile of patheticness that is New York's Rock Experience?

I'd say the day they announce it. What a dumb move. Does anyone look at the history of what works and how it works in NY before making such decisions. With the volatility of radio as it is, any move today is dangerous and risky. Face it folks, the days of double digit numbers are over. What will it take for the radio industry to realize that times have changed and so must the business of how radio operates.

Mike, I've been calling for a country station in NY for some time to boos. But frankly right now a country station here could do solid billing. Eventually someone will get smart.

A country station probably would do better than 'RXP, but not that much better, especially in terms of billing. I think that there are other potentially more lucrative options for 101.9.

I really think it's time they just go straight-up Alternative. I mean, they're playing a great selection of both new and classic alternative/indie rock, but then they go scare away the fans of that music by playing acts like Boston, Van Halen, Nickelback, and Lifehouse. This type of trucker/soccer mom rock just doesn't work mixed in with the likes of Spoon or Vampire Weekend, plus it's nothing you can't get elsewhere on the dial. I could live with them playing the type of classic rock you'd expect to hear on a more typical AAA, but I really think Alternative is the best option. Yes, I know it wouldn't give them huge ratings, but it would allow them to stand out from other NYC stations and to build a consistent, devoted audience. Maybe they could make a dent in K-Rock's ratings, if nothing else. Considering that their PD has experience doing Alternative, and that they already have a great Alternative music library, I think this is the best way to go.

Blow the thing up, it doesn't work. In the meantime they could always become "NY's Home for the Holidays". Start over with something different after the new year. One would think it's a no brainer to put country on that signal, but I would still say a true alternative to "Lite FM" would make the best sense. "Sunny 102", or "Sunny 101.9" anyone? Makes sense to me. Then again I am not making those decisions.

Country?? Alternative??
Why trade in one format that really never worked in NY (AAA) for another format that never really worked?

I could see them switching to AC but not like that crap that's on Fresh. Or I could see them switching to Classic Hits like CBS FM. In the PPM numbers CBS was a 4.9. They need some competition. Either way this format is toast and by next summer it wont be around.

A Soft AC might be possible to DIRECTLY take on WLTW, which is not what Fresh is doing at the moment. But a classic hits? I would highly advise against it. CBS-FM is doing fine on its own, and competition would likely cause one (if not both) of the stations to go under due to lower ratings leading to less advertising. CBS-FM is #7 25-54 I believe according to the latest PPMs. It's good. Not great. Adding another classic hits to the mix might lessen those numbers and give the new station an even lower ranking. Besides, CBS-FM listeners are much more loyal and relate more to the music, DJs and the CBS-FM brand than most listeners are to Lite (although I will admit dropping the Lite branding in '07 for a bit seemed to turn off some people). Nevertheless, with Bill Buchner, Al Bernstein, Stephen E. and JJ Kennedy gone (as much as I miss them), it doesn't seem that the change in on-air staff has driven people to other stations.

In Philly, WOGL has been going strong for a very long time (even better than CBS-FM), and it has no competition. I think the people realize that it would be a losing battle trying to compete with WOGL, the market's heritage station. Same case I believe here in NYC with CBS-FM.
I think RXP should do something that ISN'T already being done in NYC, if indeed it does go under.

Good point, except...I wouldn't call RXP a AAA format. Not with Linkin Park and Aerosmith on the playlist.

Considering that CBS-FM's audience is still, by an advertiser's standards, rather old (45 and over), I don't think Emmis would go that route, especially after having dithched a format (Smooth Jazz) with a similar demographic issue.

New Country 102 would be great rite about now.

There hasn't been a Country station in well over 11 years or more.

A Country format actually makes the most amount of sense, or perhaps a Rock leaning CHR/Pop station to compete against the somewhat Rhythmic leaning Z-100.

Exactly. They want something skewing younger (who doesn't these days?).

It guess it was about time for the country backers to come out of the woodwork. I feel for you for not having your format ont he air in NYC, but there's a reason why it hasn't been here in 12 years. The ratings were not good, and neither was the billing. And, despite the argument that country is strongest in the suburbs, more recent attempts at country in the suburbs have all failed at well. That's why no one is touching it. RXP may be failing, and country probably would do a little better, but it still won't be successful.

I continue to be surprised that no one has taken Z100 on directly. It seems there's an opening there to score some success and with the most desirable demos, to boot.

WRXP is a joke, but that's not a shock. Emmis loves making ill-conceived format changes.

Also, what on earth has Leslie Fram done in the last five years to prove herself worthy of a PD gig in Market #1? Last time I checked, all she did during that time frame was drive the ratings of the station she programmed into the ground. If she can't program successfully in Market #11, who on earth thought she'd make a good PD in Market #1?

Personally, I think WRXP should adopt a sound similar to Radio 104-5 in Philly.
