RXP thoughts

WRXP is frustrating. ..... they also played predictable, tired tracks by the likes of Led Zeppelin and Boston.

Exactly. It is impossible to listen to for any length of time when they pull crap like that. Yesterday I tuned in and they played some new stuff which I think is great but they always follow with a really played out tune which makes me tune out or tick me off by butchering songs (like playing a cut up version of Simple Minds, "Alive and Kicking" and then following it by Aerosmith "Dude looks like a lady". That particular Aerosmith song does not fit at all with a AAA format.)

That is exactly the same complaint I have with what is left of Atlanta radio now.
You have nothing to worry about. IF- thats the big question-IF RXP gives Leslie total control, in 60 days it will be the only thing you listen to. She knows what she's doing. I wish Atlanta could have hung on to her.

Which is why I've been hopeful since her hiring was announced, if they don't, RXP will be off the air and she'll be gone.

Just keep her off the air and she will do a good job if left to work on her own. Other than that, she is still a well-respected icon in the industry. My guess is some of those stale classic cuts will be eliminated or receive less and less spins. She might add some Beatles though.

...SMOOOOOTH....
....JAAAAAAZ.......
...CEE-DEE-ONE-OH-ONE-POINT-NINE.......

What a loss. As a jazz station they exhausted the same old playlist.....
and now they're doing it again right-off-the-bat with a playlist that is already exhausted...well half of it anyway.

I just want to say about WRXP, it's going to sound a lot like WBPM which is "Classic Hits 92.9" and the "Music Blimp" with Randy Turner (aka Randy Turnip) on Saturday nights playing New Wave and alternative music from the 80's and beyond. I love the "Music Blimp" since the last post I did on the Albany/Hudson Valley board, and Randy Turner is the best.

Last weekend, he hosted an annual "Freedom Fest" concert at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, NY performing some great classic rock songs, just like this and Q104.3. I wish that Q-104 would sound a lot like WBPM and WPDH as well as WRXP would still sound a lot like WDST in Woodstock, NY and WXPK in Bliarcliff Manor, NY.

WRXP isn't doing well in the second phase Arbitrends. Wait till the Arbitron gets release a few weeks from now before they are getting for the PPM's.

You know what, guys? When it comes to WRXP and all the stuff I'm reading about it, both on this and on other Boards, four words come to mind:

"format of the month" (Rick Sklar, "Rockin' America")

This format ain't gonna last, you guys! Emmis REALLY messed it up with this one - how the heck do they "rock" out 101.9FM in a city where there's already like three rock stations trying to make up their minds as to what kind of rock to play??!!!!

Andrea,

When the PPM become official and WRXP is STILL at the bottom of the ratings, I wonder how long will they keep the format or switch back to Smooth Jazz WQCD-101.9.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

FIRST of all, I thought that PPM was ALREADY official;

SECONDLY, considering the history of the frequency, particularly its more recent vintage, what my concern is that this could turn into a "two-year plus" situation, if you know what I mean...and

THIRDLY, Kevin, YOU if ANYONE would know or SHOULD know, as it is there are already several "rock" stations in New York City that can't make up their minds as to what kind of rock to play!!

"Tony is fearless and that's key for a programmer....once you lose the guts to make big bets, you're toast"
the above is a quote from a NY Post story about MTV program head Tony DiSanto,who's scoring big these days..
imagine if a NY radio programmer had the guts to wake up the city this summer with key, NY underground roots rock scene 'gold', indentified key tracks in rotation from The Stooges, The NY Dolls,Wayne County, The Dead Boys, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Cherry Vanilla,Richard Hell & the Void oids, David Johansen, The Psychotic Frogs,The Fast, 'rock' Blondie(not disco Blondie) and all the rest, like WPIX FM did once upon a time,standing out like diamonds in the rust that currently comprises rock playlists...oh well.....

but with the NYC radio market as FRAGMENTED as it is TODAY, what kind of demographics are we talking about here??

Are you saying that's your playlist OR are you saying they should intersperse those late 70s-early 80s "nuggetts" around what most AAA stations have as their playlists? They'd have to limit just one or two per hour at the very most IMO.

one or two per hour is exactly what I'm talking about;
it would provide some exotic appeal alongside all the same old, and the music/rock press would go crazy and steer a lot of attention to such a move;
and in case no one noticed,'the same old' isn't working....

I've been listening to 107.1 The Peak pretty religiously since moving to Northern NJ a couple months back. Now THIS is a great AAA station. RXP can't approach this.

Amen I wholeheartedly agree!! I listen online ... the signal doesn't quite make it to Orange County -------- CA not NY ;)

Since when does a PD decide the direction of a radio station? That hasn't been the case for 15 years. If you think Leslie is going to come in and all of a sudden lean the station more alternative, you're high. She's going to do whatever corporate tells her to do. She just got her dream job. She's not allowed to have an opinion. Something else I don't understand is why Emmis let the former PD bring in the new morning show, then they let him go, and they bring in Leslie. Don't they realize that this is NYC and Wall Street is listening? I can guarantee you this. Matt Pinfield talking about what type of music the members of R.E.M were into when they recorded "Automatic for the People" WILL NOT TRANSLATE INTO RATINGS!!!
You got it right! Leslie Fram can't just be a PD and stay off the air which would benefit the station. So good luck RIP, I mean RXP

It's rather ironic for me reading all of these 'RXP posts because this was EXACTLY how I felt about 'KTU when it first launched as a rhythmic station. Yet 'KTU came out with high ratings and people thought that I was nuts to talk against it because I felt that they didn't do more to bring on new music, playing the same tired out songs of the past.

Yet from what I hear about 'RXP, this sounds like the rock version of a 'KTU but without the ratings.

Just an opinion and observation.
