I tuned in for Pinfield's music morning show. If the selections mark his enthusiasm for music, he must be easily amused. I know he has an extensive collection of stuff. Where is it?

More than likely, the music he has the "freedom" to select and play on his show is nothing more than selecting the songs that are already in the 'RXP playlist...nothing more. And to be quite honest, despite my early optimism (and that of many others), the station has been a huge snoozefest from day one.

I bailed out in the first 48 hours, after they tantalized everyone with the promise of NYC roots rock, played Lou Reed, Iggy, Mott The Hoople, Ramones, and then jumped ship to the usual k rock crock...haven't tuned back in ever since

If a station's getting poor ratings, what do they have to lose by turning more of the music over to DJs like Pinfield? I'm sure he'd do at least as well as it's already doing.

Feels like the balance of the music is changing a little -- Springsteen and the Who are still there, but I'm hearing more Alternative, new and old. Heard the Buzzcocks yesterday afternoon.

when you hear Cherry Vanilla ,Wayne County or The Psychotic Frogs, let me know...roots of NYC rock, indeed!

...and I know Patti Smith has about 10 other songs they could play, not just that Springsteen-penned hit.

How about Television? Pil? Killing Joke? Gang of Four?

Not To WRXP: 104.3 is a Classic Rock Station (Only Classic Rock) 92.3 is an Active Rock station (Modern AND Classic Rock), so if The NYC has a station that plays classic rock, and a station that plays Modern And Classic Rock, why not go for a Modern Rock Format?

Agree or Disagree?

over here in Levittown PA we have 6 Rock stations with good signals. 2 Classics (105.7 and 102.9), 2 Actives (93.3 and 94.1), and 2 Alternatives/NewRockers (106.5 and 104.5) why is it that Market #1 doesnt even have 1 of each when most of the Philly/Trenton areas have 2 of each?

RXP could fill in the Modern Rock/Alternative void if they would go full out New Rock. then The NYC would have 1 Classic, 1 Active, and 1 Alternative/Modern.

Those distinct format names (read: lines of demarcation) are the reason radio is in the soup it's in.

Personally, I would ignore the 90s for the most part, save for a few key artists in 'alternative'.

Ya know, I think it's the thing Bob Waugh did at K-rock about 20 years ago that we need: The Teardrop Explodes, Pixies, Throwing Muses, some Cure (some other stuff that crept over from WDRE/WLIR during that time). I would add some legacy artists like VU, Patti Smith (stuff that isn't already well-worn) The Stranglers, XTC (haven't heard them in a long while) The Feelies, The Wedding Present, The Three O'Clock, The Chameleons UK... even reserve a corner for top-notch 'electronica' artists-DJ shadow, Grassy Knoll and Aphex Twin among them. This would really be NEW YORK IMHO-you get a taste of each of these in NYC first on the radio or in a club somewhere.

Maybe a bit of the Mothers...or at least some good Psych...

Oh, you don't know some of these artists? You may like them if you heard them.

There's a whole chance for a movement of sorts (You listening, Matt?) Now more than ever chances need to be taken. Go for it. We can get beyond 'Blister in the Sun' even.

Top 40 would be better, it probably wouldn't top Z. but it would be better than this, It MIGHT Even push co-owned Kiss up to #1 (which passed lite this time...good job E-Bro) by eating some share from Z.

If the station is emphasizing Alternative more, that's great. They've definitely improved since they first signed on, especially with jocks like Matt Pinfield and Brian Phillips. If they drop the trucker rock and add more currents, they'll have completely won me over. Whether they can pull some decent ratings is another matter altogether.

I think the hiring of Matt Pinfield is a sign of the direction RXP is going...it has slowly improved with time..NYC radio is dominated with cookie cutter crap...this is needed, and could work if done right.

I listened to Matt Pinfield today on the way to work and I thought he sounded great. Except for the one Nickelback song that I heard, I really enjoyed the music and his knowledge of the music he was playing.

RXP's music does appeal to my personal taste more than any other station around here does.

Just my opinion of course......

Let's take a look:

9:12 AM "LET IT BLEED" - ROLLING STONES <-Stones seem to always get a pass-maybe
9:09 AM "TOWN CALLED MALICE" - THE JAM <-Movie song...big catalog there-pick another
9:05 AM "VIOLET HILL" - COLDPLAY <- dump
9:02 AM "SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE" - AEROSMITH <-old 'smith gets a pass-sometimes
8:56 AM "WISER TIME" - BLACK CROWES <- bag this
8:46 AM "DANCING BAREFOOT" - PATTI SMITH <- little better, need deeper
8:43 AM "ACCIDENTLY IN LOVE" - COUNTING CROWS <- dump this whiny crap
8:39 AM "KEEP THE CAR RUNNING" - ARCADE FIRE <-yes
8:34 AM "MIDDLE OF THE ROAD" - PRETENDERS <-overplayed when it came out
8:29 AM "SCARE EASY" - MUDCRUTCH <- Dump-Petty soundalike-bury this
8:25 AM "THE ROCKAFELLER SKANK" - FATBOY SLIM <-pick another track
8:23 AM "I'M SO TIRED" - BEATLES <-Great at 8.23 in the morning
8:13 AM "FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT" - BEASTIE BOYS <-sure, and they got other songs
8:06 AM "SEX & CANDY" - MARCY PLAYGROUND <-bag this
8:01 AM "SHE'S THE ONE" - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN <-good to follow arcade fire, context
7:57 AM "DRIVE" - INCUBUS <-um, no. Bands with DJs are so cliche now anyway-seems like a whole bunch of bands wrote sappy crap in the same key.
7:52 AM "MY WIFE" - WHO <-interesting choice-a really deep album cut, but why this after everything else that's been ignored?
7:48 AM "MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE" - POLICE <- how about 'Peanuts'? 'The Bed's too Big?'
7:44 AM "CANDY" - IGGY POP <-please, no..Later Ig-how about 'Winners and Losers'?
7:34 AM "I WANT YOU TO WANT ME" - CHEAP TRICK <-OK -STOP THIS NOW
7:30 AM "LUCKY MAN" - THE VERVE <-ZZZZZZZZZZ
7:23 AM "ROCKSTAR" - NICKELBACK <-No thanks
7:20 AM "TRIP THROUGH YOUR WIRES" - U2 <-meh- but people still like em
7:16 AM "HANGING BY A MOMENT" - LIFEHOUSE <-didn't they steal the main riff from something else? Maudlin crapola.
7:12 AM "RAMBLE ON" - LED ZEPPELIN <- Please. Stop. Now.
7:05 AM "THE PEDESTRIAN" - FOXBORO HOT TUBS <-Play the Elvis Costello or whatever else this rips off
6:59 AM "CREEP" - STONE TEMPLE PILOTS <-I can think of several better heroin-soaked artists
6:56 AM "ALL MIXED UP" - 311 <-F**k these clowns...crap
6:46 AM "GOD PUT A SMILE UPON YOUR FACE" - COLDPLAY <-no
6:43 AM "LIFE DURING WARTIME" - TALKING HEADS <-I'm partial..throw in some solo Eno
6:39 AM "SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK BLUES" - BOB DYLAN <-oyyyyyyyyy maybeee occasional
6:35 AM "LOVE ROLLERCOASTER" - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS <- "Fight like a Brave"?
6:30 AM "I WILL POSSESS YOUR HEART" - DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE <-How about some Bonzo Dog Band instead?
6:27 AM "WHAT YOU NEED" - INXS <-What I don't need...this song needs a noose too
6:18 AM "SELLING THE DRAMA" - LIVE <-Just let them die already, won't you?
6:15 AM "KILLER QUEEN" - QUEEN <- context, maybe
6:11 AM "SHUT YOUR EYES" - SNOW PATROL <- Like it, but pull out other sound-alikes from neopsych era
6:06 AM "LITTLE GUITARS (W/INTRO)" - VAN HALEN <-replace this like an old hip
6:02 AM "WONDERWALL" - OASIS <- maybe occasionally..but why, I don't know.

How about Stereolab? Big Star? Soundgarden? Bowie? Nine Inch Nails? (Oh, wait, he doesn't play the label game anymore...oh well). APB? The Buzzcocks? Roxy Music?

At this pace, MP will be jettisoned before he can play anything really good.

I am of the opinion that the looped beat from the Snow Patrol song "Chasing Cars" (another fine staple in the 'RXP playlist) was stolen from the "Silver Shamrock" theme song in the movie "Halloween III: Season of the Witch".

Sounds like a project...get that A/B clip together.
