I'm referring to 1050 ESPN New York's newest radio duo, Batman, errr, I mean, Ryan and Robin, as in Ruocco and Lundberg. I know Ryan started out on the station as a "SportsCenter" anchor during shows, delivering sports updates, and I think Robin did, as well.
Then, management decided to cut some more corners and decided to let the hosts themselves do the updates. Yet, they saw some promise in R&R, and decided to keep them on the payroll.
Currently, they're co-hosting the hours before (5 AM) and after (10 AM) "Mike & Mike." (They playfully refer to the 10 AM show as "the second verse." Whatever.) They even got a little publicity for a "road trip to Dallas" last week en route to the Super Bowl.
Today (and presumably tomorrow) they subbed (are subbing) for Michael Kay (he's scheduled to get hitched with WPIX anchor Jodi Applegate this weekend). Maybe it's an acquired taste, or maybe it's just me, but when you're used to hearing Kay in that time period, and used to Don LaGreca filling in when Kay's absent for whatever reason, hearing the equivalent of Evan & Joe on helium just hits you like a ton of bricks. It's because they do a different style of show - one suitable for early afternoons, not afternoon drive. Even still, they're only been hosting for just a few months now. Shouldn't they have to work just a little bit harder if they want to sub for the Voice of the Yankees?
Now, Stephen A. Smith will be filling in for Kay a couple of days next week. But at least he brings a wealth of experience that R&R lack.
And in case anyone's wondering: With Stephen A's arrival (return) comes a departure, and that means Bonnie Bernstein is the odd man (woman) out. Hope she lands on her feet soon.
