Ryan Seacrest to take over for Dick Clark

From All Access:

Good news! It's been announced that the legendary DICK CLARK will make his return to the television airwaves on DECEMBER 31 to host the 34th edition of "DICK CLARK'S NEW YEAR'S ROCKIN' EVE" live from NYC's TIMES SQUARE alongside RYAN SEACREST, reports the AP. It will be CLARK's first public appearance since he suffered from a minor stroke last DECEMBER.

CLARK said in a statement, "It will be good to be back in NEW YORK again for New Year's and I'm elated that RYAN has agreed to join me in ushering in New Year's."

SEACREST, host of "AMERICAN IDOL," has agreed to a multiyear deal to executive produce and join CLARK as co-host of the ABC special. SEACREST will eventually take over as host. "DICK CLARK is an American icon. I am honored that he has entrusted me with such a role in this national tradition," SEACREST said in a statement.

"He's doing really well," said CLARK publicist PAUL SHEFRIN. "He's walking. He's talking. He's living a fairly normal life. He just wants to fine-tune it before he sticks his head out and makes his return to television."

Interesting news. Ryan Seacrest will likely become the next Dick Clark. He is very successful and I think he is ok, not as good as Dick Clark, but he is talented. Any word on the syndicated radio shows though?

Of all the talented people in NY and Hollywood, how did they end up with Seacrest replacing Dick Clark?

My little toe has more "talent" than Seacrest (aka SeaCrap)!!

Exactly! Someone PLEASE explain THAT to me! Even Carson Daly is a better fit than Seacrest! This is the most disgusting thing I had ever heard!

How can someone with so little talent be able to take over Rick Dees, Casey Kasem and now Dick Clark all in 1 year?! Who did he screwed to get all this? I swear.. and I thought his own shameless act of buying his own star was sickening.. now this? There is NO WAY Dick Clark personally thought Seacrest has the qualification to replace him.

I think it's kind of vogue to hate Seacrest, but he and Dick Clark aren't much different.

Dick Clark really has built his career around youthful good looks and a very nice speaking voice. So has Ryan Seacrest.
______________

I'm utterly disgusted to hear that Ryan Seacrest will eventually take over for Dick Clark. Everyone needs to jump off the Seacrest bandwagon.

I am delighted to hear that Dick Clark is doing better. Hopefully he will stay America's Oldest Teenager, and Seacrest will never get a chance to take over.

Agreed. What's next? Hosting all Super Bowl games for the next 50 years? Replacing 'The Terminator' for Govenor of California? His own cooking show?! OK, I'm overreacting. (*takes deep breath and sighs*).
______________

ABC's Part In This?

All of this makes me wonder: how much of a factor did ABC play in this? Maybe ABC played a part in "asking" Dick Clark to step down?

I think Ryan is ok, but he no way as talented as Dick Clark. Mr. Clark is a classic radio and TV legend. But, we should give him a chance I guess.
______________

ABC would be stupid to do that. Dick Clark can't be around forever though, even though I wish he would be.
______________

Wow, there are a lot of anti-Seacrest people here. Shouldn't we give him a chance and see how he does this New Year's?
______________

Sooner or later, Seacrest will do something incredibly stupid, and the world will suddenly see how fleeced they were by the corporate suits who are so enamored of him.

This is not a prediction per se; it's more an application of the Peter Principle.
______________

But that doesn't mean they wouldn't do it. Especially with Mr. Clark's health. Look at what radio did to Rick Dees and Casey Kasem. I dunno if I'd be so quick to dismiss ABC in this one.

Re: Ryan Seacrest and Dick Clark

"New Year's Rockin' Eve" traditionally consists of the live coverage of the countdown to 12 Midnight in Times Square, and musical performances taped two to there weeks or so beforehand in a Hollywood TV studio. In recent years, the program (especially the 10-11 P.M. EST portion) has also featured musical performances broadcast live or on a same-night tape basis from New Year's Eve rock/pop concerts all over North America.

It will be interesting to see how Ryan Seacrest is utilized on this December's show.

It's even possible Seacrest may not even be in Times Square at all, but instead, may preside over the pre-taped musical performance segments in Hollywood. Or, since the show now extends to 2 A.M. EST, he may be in Chicago or New Orleans to count down to Midnight there, which with the time difference, will be 1 A.M. EST.

Another thing going for Seacrest is that he supposedely has a high "Q" score among young women. His syndicated radio countdown show is also supposed to be quite popular among young women. It may only be a matter of time before his KIIS-102.7 Los Angeles morning show gets nationally syndicated, possibly to become the morning show of all (or nearly all of) the Clear Channel-owned "Kiss FM" top-40/CHR stations.

What's Fox gonna do without Seacrest?

Naturally, this begs the next question...What is Fox gonna do? I don't think Seacrest's Hollywood elite approach will play well to the Red states for NYE. Fox tried On Air with Ryan Seacrest & the Sunday AT40 special with low ratings. However, they must keep him for AI.

Crossing networks, huh?

You know the funny thing here is the rhetoric that Seacrest puts out about his ambitions. In LA Radio Dot Com on Tuesday there was a report on an exchange between Mancow and Seacrest where he says something like radio is what he loves doing and that all the other stuff is just icing on the cake. Come on, his goal has always been to go beyond radio. When he was blown out at Star and went to K101 in San Francisco there was a story almost every week in R&R about how he would be coming back to LA. He needed to be in So. Cal. in order to further his Hollywood career, and over the years he's done any and every TV project that he could get his hands on. So far he's taken over for some of radio's biggest, and it isn't by accident, it's by design. That being said, wouldn't we all do the same thing if the opportunity came our way. Sure, but he should just be honest about it. He keeps the radio gig for 2 reasons. One, he's got a multi-year million dollar contract, and two, it's still a safety net should the other gigs fail.
