Ryan Seacrest vs. Perez Hilton

I often listen to bits and pieces of Ryan Seacrest's weekend AT40 show and got to thinking about something. Does Perez Hilton have some kind of a countdown show too? I read something online about him having some kind of evening radio show that started at the end of May, but I don't think that has anything to do with the weekend show he currently hosts (or maybe hosted in the past). What's the show Perez Hilton has hosted up to this point?

I have to say I'm not crazy about either of these two guys, but Perez Hilton in my opinion is worse because of all the celebrity bashing he seems to enjoy doing.

I miss the days of Casey Kasem when the countdown was all about the music, long-distance dedications, interesting tidbits about the songs/songwriters/artists, and so on. Now the music doesn't really matter. It's all about celebrity gossip sleaze. :'(

Oh, but that's booooooring to the target demo, relevant facts about the song and artist. It's much more fun to talk about Kim Kardashian and have the countdown more as an afterthought.

Who cares about song and artist when it's a no-talent nimrod who won his record deal on a reality TV show?

The recording industry has really cheapened the value of being an "artist." As long as they're cute with a fan base, who cares?

It's leveled the playing field between Kardashian and the people making music. The celebrities are probably better known.

Perez does the Fab 30 Countdown http://affiliates.westwoodone.com/music/fab30.asp - It's obviously not too important, if you google "Fab 30" or something likewise, http://perezhilton.com/fab30 comes up...and that tracklisting page hasn't been updated in over a year.

He just started hosting Perez Nights Live on Cumulus CHR's.

Ah yes ... the Fab 30 countdown. I don't think I've heard that countdown at all in the market where I live (Grand Rapids), but I have heard it elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing that link.

I forgot about the Rick Dees countdown. Out of all three of these countdowns (Rick Dees, Ryan Seacrest, and Perez Hilton), which one is the best and why?

My guess is that Rick Dees probably has the best countdown because I don't think his is all about the celebrity sleaze. Unfortunately, the Grand Rapids market only gets Seacrest. It would be nice to hear Rick Dees on the radio around here.

Dees invented the celebrity sleaze report 20 years ago with "Dees Sleaze." Long before Seacrest or Hilton.

The Dees weekly countdowns (both CHR and HAC) are available on his website.

Of all the countdown shows his probably is more styled like Kasem's was. He does give the "interesting tidbits about the songs" and doesn't use long celeb interviews like Seacrest does.

All I have to say to that is "The Monkees." It's nothing new. At least Kelly Clarkson is actually talented. Same thing with Carrie Underwood.

But not to the degree we have today. The talent bar has been lowered practically to the floor. Making music is seen as just another platform for marketing one's celebrity. That's why Perez has credibility. And local DJs no longer are the windows to the stars they once were. The stars can bypass the gatekeepers and go straight to the fans. So even if a radio station isn't playing the music, their listeners are probably familiar with the stories.

Thanks for clearing that up. For some reason I don't remember all the sleaze talk. I had the opportunity to listen to part of a recent Rick Dees countdown when I was in Memphis a little over a month ago, and I don't remember hearing much of it then either.

Thanks for providing this link! It's awesome... especially because it breaks down the separate shows ('80s, '90s, Hot AC, CHR, etc.).

That's what I was thinking when I originally said Rick Dees' show is similar to what Casey Kasem's was like.
