r s ...is going to start an afternoon shift 3-7pm on star 103.1 on monday june 16. for those in the know, i ask
....why...? doesn't he have enough to do? doesn't he do a morning gig in L A? will this afternoon show be simulcast around the country, or is it exclusive to the bay area?

thanks

the show is gonna bomb, if john tesh bombed on star, what makes them think that ryan seacrest will do good?

"for those in the know, i ask....why...? doesn't he have enough to do?"

It will just be another voice-tracked show. I understand that it takes about 45 minutes to VT a show, so it's not like it's a big chunk of time out of Ryan's busy day. Or perhaps they'll use portions of his KIIS morning show, and Ryan will have to add very little or even no extra content.

My guess is that it will be aired on other Clear Channel stations around the country, with pre-recorded drop ins for each station..."I'm Ryan Seacrest - now here's Star 101.3 Traffic"

Seeing as how it's the great Ryan, there might actually BE some content, and it might be an improvement over the terrible VTed dreck they've been using the last few years.

Since it's San Francisco, maybe Star can promote On-Air by playing the Katy Perry hit "Ryan Seacres is So Gay, He Doesn't Like Boys." ;D. Sorry, it was a joke played on AT 40 last weekend.

Yes, it's being syndicated, there are announcements in the trades of stations adding the show all over the nation, most of them are Clear Channel stations right now, but they're looking to get him on other company's stations as well. There was a story on All Access today regarding his show being added to Clear Channel Top 40 WHKF (KISS)/Harrisburg, PA where he will be on Middays with Ellen K. It will most likely use segments of his morning show with custom tracks added to get the call letters in for traffic intros and such. Nothing new, just the way syndicated shows have been done for years. Personally I don't really find much about the show that new or original. When he started mornings at KIIS-FM he kept doing most of the same segments that Rick Dees did, they just renamed them. About the only thing he really can offer is celebrity interviews. I believe that if CC and their syndication arm Premiere Networks gets their way he'll be on in every market they own stations in. They want to get their money's worth out of him.

As far as having content, it's not that hard when you have so much support staff. I would give him much more credit if he was doing it like every other VT'er who only has his or her own self to come up with information. Believe me, there are many more talented people who would sound better if they had the kind of help he gets. Plus, you have to remember that a lot of the "VT'ed dreck" you hear is because CC keeps preaching to their talent outside of morning drive to keep it very short. You can't always blame the talent, most do what they're told to keep their jobs.

I wasn't blaming the talent at all - it's management's responsibility. People have debated VTed shows on this board before, and I've always argued that there is no reason a VTed show can't be good, and have interesting content, or at least SOME content. DJs don't read live commercials or do time-checks on the air anymore - they haven't for years, so there's no practical reason that a music program on FM radio has to be live...other than to make jokes with the traffic reporter, and...who cares?

By "VTed dreck" I was referring to Darren McPeake and his few cookie-cutter predecessors on Star. You could listen for an entire hour, and you'd hear him twice...maybe...for ten seconds tops. What's the point of even pretending to have a DJ - VTed or live? Why not just do it like "Jack" - throw in some clever liners, and stop pretending?

They could "keep it short" and still provide a lot more content than they do now.

That's why I said if Ryan's show actually has some content - celebrity interviews, and bits recycled from his morning show, it will be an improvement.

LKeller, I agree with you, VT'd shows can be every bit as good, but when you're multi tasking, doing the job of many, perhaps doing your own "live" show and tracking shows for stations all-over the country in order to eek out a living because they pay crap wages it's pretty easy to see why the content in sparse.

Of course there are some formats that would be light on content whether they’re VT’d or not. McPeake was probably in over his head moving from Oxnard/Ventura to San Francisco in a single bound. I heard him do a try out show on KBIG Los Angeles before he went to SF and I had my doubts. Then again, he may have just been following instructions or multi-tasking himself into oblivion.

jeffdfw, it's no rumor, Seacrest will be coming to KHKS very soon. He adds to his bank account and puts more of his brother and sister deejays out of work. Seacrest is about the only voice tracker at Clear Channel who will be paid well.

I tried to send you a PM (I guess my post count is'nt high enough to utilize the PM's) to save myself from embarassment on asking this on the open forum....But can you please define for me what a stop-set is, as well as Voice-tracking? I'm not radio savvy like most folks in here...lol

Hi FastPhilly,
A stop set is a commercial break. VT is short for voice-tracking where the DJ pre-records their breaks, er, I mean, what they say on the air. So, what you hear is memorex, not the real deal.
