Ryerson University applies for campus AM station in Toronto

Radio Ryerson has applied for a community based campus station on 1280 AM in Toronto. The new station will operate with 100 watts fulltime. The format will be diversified with 70% devoted to spoken word and 30% to music. The station will be branded as THE SCOPE with the call letters CJRU reserved.

low power

actually it's 99 watts which makes it low power. 100 watts is considered full power.

AM Radio? What year is this school living in? Have college students even heard of AM radio? They might do better with carrier current.

The CBC said people weren't getting decent reception in downtown Toronto with 50kw on 740; how the heck is anybody going to hear 100w on 1280? Steel frame buildings. Trolleys. Subways.

There's no vacant FM left in Toronto. The previous station at 1280 was also low powered but really got out. It would be a good assumption the transmitter will be on or near campus, the station's intended listening area, and there won't be any signal issues in the intended listening area.

A trolley and subway line run right past the campus, which is in the middle of the central business district. But even if somebody can pick it up, it doesn't change the basic fact that college age students don't do AM radio. What's next? A silent movie channel for students. A stable so students who commute on horseback have someplace to park their mounts. Ice delivery to dorm rooms provided with "ice boxes."

Tell that to CJLO 1690 in Montreal. Consistently voted one of Montreal's best radio stations by people in that age group. And it is a Campus station....we don't use the term College for Universities up here. Trolley lines don't interfere with all AM frequencies, only certain ones, like 740. The original 1280 didn't have trolley interference, and this one won't either.

Yep. They should have applied for, and been granted, 50 watts on 89.9. I'm sure the neighbours would be ok with them as interference would be minimal considering the signal strength of both CIUT and CJBC in the downtown area. Coverage would be better than AM for sure and more receivers to hear it on.

This is why college radio doesn't teach you anything about real world radio.
