Rythmic Christian?

Ok so I'm doing my lowly-board-op job at the Top40 station I work for, sitting in on American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest (thankfully Steve Carrell is guest hosting and I don't have to hear Lame-crest this week!)

Anyway, I digress, I am looking over the runsheet and was reminded of something that I believe has been brought up before in some discussion. 8 of the top 10 songs on the chart are of "Rythmic" desent.

Now lately I'm in my rock phase anyway - so CCM has been great for me. But how in the wide world of sports are we going to stay relevant and witness to the youth of this culture if we have so little GOOD rythmic christian? Ok, I know we're supposed to support anyone who's in ministry - but I'm sorry - if it's not good, corny, whatever - the lost won't listen..and neither will I.

Thoughts?

Well - even when we have had great artists in Christian Rhythmic / Rap / R&B - I don't think they were very widely supported. And, when stations have attempted to play more of this sort of music, it doesn't seem like the financial support is there from listeners or underwriters (or, perhaps, the station(s) was unable to properly market itself).

Spring Arbor University, home of Home.FM, is apparently flipping the sister station Christian CHR 89.3 The Vibe; this fall, it will become Christian Soft AC 89.3 The Message. I guess they have decided that financial support will be greatly improved, and it will offer a 100% Christian music alternative to those past supporters that may not appreciate the Christian/Secular Hybrid AC Home.FM.

You might check out Y-Hot in Orlando - radioy.com if you are looking for a good Rhythmic format.

In spite of the name, I don't think 89.3 The Vibe played any rhythmic music other than what few songs made the core of the Christian CHR format.

We at ChargeRadio.com just passed the three year mark this weekend, with listenership near an all-time high (we actually did set several all-time highs in April), thanks in large part to some mad love from the Atlanta market. We're sticking with a nearly 50/50 balance. On the rhythmic side, we've been playing Sean Simmonds, tobyMac, Group 1 Crew, FLAME, Manafest, Beckah Shae, and an ever-expanding array of independent and minor label artists.

Sadly, Christian Rhythmic is largely ignored. There is very cool stuff out there. William mentioned a few. I'll throw out Trip Lee, Lecrae, Willie Will and Godkinz. Very cool stuff.

P.S. Y-Hot is very cool. Also, WAYK/WAYG in Michigan plays rhythmic songs as well.

Chris Chicago is doing the Lord's work. The market I sell in now has a Contemporary Christian station that's adding some rythmic including Flame and TobyMac to very positive response from their underwriters.

I really pray that this format builds. It seems that portion of the culture is one that needs it just as bad as the rockers.
