The one-two punch of San Antonio radio is, once again, rap and rock and rock and rap.
KBBT-FM, alias "The Beat," and hard-rockin' KISS-FM, starring the caustic likes of John Lisle and Steve Hahn, nabbed No. 1 and No. 2 in the general-listener category — 12 and older, Monday-Sunday — in the summer Arbitron ratings book just out.
The survey covered roughly July through September. Despite a relative lack of big stories, WOAI scored a substantial No. 7 in general listenership.
KISS, in particular, did gangbusters in the younger-listener category of 18 to 34, taking No. 1 in both all-day ratings and for its Lisle & Hahn morning show.
KONO of the oldies format also was a summer winner with the advertiser-beloved 25-to-54 category, a time when nostalgic and fun tunes are extremely popular. KSMG of the '80s, '90s and today tunes also made out like a bandit, grabbing No. 3 among ages 25-54.
In the Spanish-language category, KROM's romantic sound and bawdy talk show in the mornings scored high. That show took No. 1 in the mornings among listeners 25 to 54.
As for S.A.'s country music race, KAJA-FM overtook KCYY as the most-listened-to station. Seems the relatively new "Two Guys in the Morning" format has begun to make an impression.
