S.F. Broadcasters Come Clean on HD Radio

My thoughts are to NOT require HD radio due the costs to am operators and the listeners for HD radios. I think it would be a much easier sell to NOT require HD.

Because HD is not a mature technology, as the 10db increase of recent shows, most stations have been hesitant to have HD capability on auxiliary transmitters or sites... the result being, as we saw in the LA fires last summer, having almost every HD equipped transmitter in the market off the air is possible.

Were you the only one that noticed this disaster in broadcasting, or were there three or four others as well?

Have you seen the IBOC cheer leading in the latest Radio World? Wow!

It's all about the money... like it always is!

$$$$$$$$. Need I say more? The more the hype, the more vendors spend on ads. What a vicious cycle. Think of all the talent those millions of capital dollars could have been diverted to ultimately increasing the real worth of the property and generating more revenue for the company. The root of the problem is bean counters can't figure out how to have a formula and inventory sheet for humans. They spend capital on $h1t they don't really need, but heaven forbid they hire another person for anything. Until our industry gets out of that mode, things will continue downward. There is a bit of hope out there. To be honest, it seems to be little am stations, and properties like that. I know of at least a couple small stations that have been polished up a bit, and talent hired. Both have done really well lately. One of them litterly has doubled their revenue (had good cashflow before). That's what happens when you spend a small amount of capital and buy some help worth having. ;)

* CBS Radio has quietly told all of its Chief Engineers that CBS will NOT be proceeding with 6-dB power increases
This is Very bad news for HD Radio. CBS seems to me to be the company that has got on the HD radio bandwagon the most for a few reasons
*They stream their HD Subchannels
*In Most Markets they are the only company to own an HD-3 (execpt in New York and Los Angeles) like in my home market of San Francisco and nearby Sacramento
*Their HD-2s and HD-3s have "Commercial Breaks" with PSAs
*Their Subchannels have many different bumpers that play every few songs while the others usually have a quick, boring,Voicetracked station ID At the Top of the hour
We've had some good times Mister HD Radio Bandwagon Driver,But I really should be going now.

I share a site and combined antenna with a few CBS FMs. We're getting ready for the increase now, and as CBS owns most of the stations on the antenna, the upgrade wouldn't be happening without them. If CBS isn't doing this, someone should really tell CBS.

After the first article I made reference to came out, both iBiquity and CBS swiftly issued their own replies:

http://www.rbr.com/radio/ENGINEERING/94/24703.html

http://www.rbr.com/radio/ENGINEERING/94/24677.html

According to CBS: "We are moving forward with power boosts of FM stations on an ongoing basis with several scheduled to be implemented in the near future.”

And the intrigue continues.

As per my FCC filings, they should have mandated new minimum AM tuner specifications, rather than HD-AM for ANY radio that included an HD-FM tuner section!
Decent AM tuners, automatic digital noise blanking, automatic/manual bandwidth, ability to recieve heritage C-Quam AND any new SDR broadcast schemes, to make it future proof are all more important than the HD-AM trainwreck.

As far as HD-FM, I'm surpised that the Class A's haven't jumped on the bandwagon to increase their digital power, as they need it worst; however, they needed that option when they first installed their equipment; now with the economy down the hopper, there's no coin for the HD-FM power increase that would help the rimshots and marginal stations, especially on portables with the constant back and forth between analog and digital.
