SA 102.3 change

KYRQ 90.3 Natalia is now rebroadcasting their Spanish Christian format on K272EK. They must be using Internet or the equivalent to serve 102.3 with audio, because there's no FM static on it and KYRQ is very far away from it.

If it's doing that, the translator is operating illegally unless it got permission from the FCC. The FCC usually doesn't grant waivers in well-served areas.

Depending on the translator, it's quite possible it's capturing KYRQ off-air. The FCC's contour estimates assume a 30 foot antenna, and some translators run their antennas much higher than that. You can get quite-a-bit at 100 feet off the ground, and some operate higher than that.

I don't think it's capturing KYRQ off-air because I've listened on 102.3 and the audio is crystal clear. I am not able to receive KYRQ 90.3 very well at all downtown. Even on the west side the signal is weak.

I'm not fluent in Spanish, but quality/engineering wise the sound on this 102.3 FM is not bad at all! It would be nice if other stations adopted those settings with no digital artifacts and no clipping/distortion. Most stations have too much distortion because the corporate radio people think it's a good idea to make it too loud to boost ratings.
