SAD DAY FOR ATLANTA RADIO

How were 'Talk America's' ratings in their short life span?

[EDIT-post removed per TOS]

You're definitely right about that. Air America was on mostly poor AM signals. I've also always felt that conservative positions on issues such as guns, abortion and other things, evoked more emotion from people than the "kinder" liberal points of view. What I find very surprising is that after the election, MSNBC has been beating Fox News Channel in prime time.

How about this? The host has no idea what he or she is going to talk about until they reach the station. They draw the subject(s), and whether they have to argue pro or con that day, out of a hat and have one hour of show prep.

The only one that I can think of just retired. :-[

Locally, we do not have anyone with that kind of talent anymore. It used to be that radio entertainers like Ludlow Porch and Neal Boortz could show up for work and start talking. BUT, they did not walk in the door talking about politics. The basic problem with conservative radio is that there is nothing new. How many times an hour can they say "I hate the Democrats"?

Rush used to be an entertainer when he first started. He was fun to listen to no matter what the politics were. Now, it is just boring because it is a bash the Democrats or anybody who doesn't agree with us kind of show.

Neal was fun to listen to. Neal had fun doing the show and it showed. Now, we say all of this as he retired. There were some times during the election process that I just had to stop listening. Many on this board complained about Neal becoming just another conservative talk show. Unfortunately that is what station programmers have been looking for. As the conservative talk format cools off, hopefully there will be room for some innovation.

By the way, I am a liberal who cannot listen to Randy Rhodes either. She is just another Rush with a different repetitive message of anger. I want to be entertained. My life does not begin and end with politics.

Lest we not forget that WSB was once home to Mike Malloy, a liberal talk host. Politics aside, he was engaging, funny and intelligent and even when I disagreed with him, he made me think.

It wasn't always politics on Mike's WSB show, either. On Friday nights he hosted a dating show called "Dateless and Desperate," which was some of the funniest radio I've ever heard.

He's still at it and syndicates his own show now.

After trying to listen to Herman Cain over the past two days, I just cannot take it. I have
turned on the radio, stayed with it for a while, then, in disgust, turned it off.
Anyone want to make bets on how long Cox and WSB will let this nonsense continue?
I am sure I am not the only one turning off the radio. I started this blog and I still
say that WSB made a hurried decision naming Cain to "replace" Boortz. There are too
many really good talk show hosts in this country that could have filled Boortz's shoes.
Cain is NOT the person for the job. He is a businessman and a politician. He certainly
is NOT a radio talk show host. And he should be taken off the air ASAP.

I agree with DD. HC is just aweful and I cannot listen. If WSB stays with him their numbers will continue to drop as thet are on a slide now.

The next Arbitron book will be the beginning of the story. The real story will be told in the March book since it will cover a full month of HC and most people will have figured out by then that Bootze is not there anymore.

A major void without Neal Boortz on WSB. I think eventually they will have to come up with a different plan. Boortz would engage and entertain the listeners; Cain just sits there yelling at the mic and dictating his political philosophy. It becomes quite annoying and irritating and I just can't continue to listen. While I did not always agree with Boortz, he made you think and his opinions were usually backed up by well researced arguments. I like the way Boortz annoyed me at times, but Cain's annoying tirades are altogether different and not entertaining at all.

SO GLAD SOMEONE ELSE AGREES HOW IRRITATING HERMAN CAIN IS ON THE AIR.
YES HE IS ANNOYING. HELLO WSB MANAGEMENT ARE YOU READING ALL OF THESE
COMMENTS. YOUR LISTENERS ARE VANISHING BETWEEN 9am AND NOON. EVEN
CLARK HOWARD WOULD BE A BETTER BET THAN CAIN. "CAIN IS A PAIN"

Boortz was an entertainer. He just used politics as his subject matter. Cain, Hannity, and Limbaugh are all political pundits. For them, politics is all that matters.

I agree for the most part but believe Limbaugh understands the entertainment part of it.

Without a doubt Limbaugh has mastered the show biz aspect. People will not listen to a boring talk show. Boortz may have discussed politics, but he also entertained and engaged the listener, and was also informative in the process. So far, Cain has failed to be entertaining.

100% in agreement. When HC was a Christmas week fill-in, I realized then, this guy will not make it. I gave it a year before somebody at the White Columns is smart enough to do something...Cain is a pain on the brain

The reason why nothing will compare to Boortz is his unique thought process. He is pretty far to the right yet pisses the Republicans like Bauchman, Palin, and Santorum off with his arguably very liberal social views. Meanwhile, he consideres himselt libertarian yet pisses libertarians off with his lack of respect for nuts like Alex Jones and his more moderate approach to war. He pisses the left off just because. He pisses Christians off but considers himself as a Christian. He does not repeat some old talking points of most on the right. He's the only talking head I would listen to and cain nor limbaugh will come close to replacing him.
