If they build a monument to booth announcers, Leif Jensen will be on it, as will Lindy Miller, William Pierce and Ken Stahl. IT would be great to hear more nominees. If we add the UHFs, we could add Tom Evans and Dana Hersey, although those seemed recorded as opposed to the live booths of the VHFs through the mid 60s.
They were expected to be flawless, unflappable, dignified, friendly and authoritative. They delivered station breaks, commercials, news bulletins, intros, tag lines, rapid-fire legal niceties, sign-ons, sign-offs and promos. And in an era when the technical end could, and often did, break down, they had to soothe the agitated audience with a voice over the technical difficulties card.
The best were on radio-tv combos. The traditional staff announcers, especially from WNAC and WHDH were superb.
As for Mr. Jensen, one should remember that the WNAC booth guys had the same amount of time left by the network for station IDs that the other stations had, but needed to get in that little extra "Your RKO General Station" without making it sound rushed or cramped.
But hey, I'm one of those old fogeys who delights in hearing a well-executed "Equal Housing Lender, Member FDIC"
Finally, here's a trivia question that I don't know the answer to, but who was the first regular female booth announcer in town. I'm trying to remember the name, Donna something on WCVB, but I could be wrong about the name, but I'm pretty sure of the station. She was very good, that I do remember.
