Sad Songs / Tear Jerkers

We had great success with the novelties, how'bout the sad ones....

Old Shep....Elvis
I can never go home anymore...Shangri-las
Teen Angel..Mark Denning
That's when your heartaches begin...Elvis

"I Can Never Go Home Anymore" is probably the biggest downer of all time. It's a beautiful record, but I can't believe such a depressing song became a Top 10 hit! "Leader of the Pack" should count as well - it's said the lead singer of the group was actually in tears while she was recorded the song, and you can hear it in her voice.

Let's not forget:
Bobby Goldsboro - Honey
Simon & Garfunkel - I Am A Rock (maybe not a "sad" song, but its lyrics are very dark and the overall effect is something of a downer even though the song is upbeat)
Petula Clark - Kiss Me Goodbye
The Mamas & The Papas - Monday, Monday
The Skyliners - Since I Don't Have You
Dee Clark - Raindrops
Paul Anka - It's Time to Cry
Dusty Springfield - You Don't Have to Say You Love Me
Brenda Holloway - Every Little Bit Hurts
Poppy Family - Which Way You Goin' Billy? and That's Where I Went Wrong
Brenda Lee - Break It to Me Gently (later excellently covered in 1982 by Juice Newton)
Elvis - In the Ghetto
Walker Bros. - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)

Going ahead into the '70s, for some reason "Shannon" by Henry Gross always makes me tear up. Perhaps it's because I have a soft spot for dogs.

Others from the '70s:
Janis Ian - At Seventeen
Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
Carpenters - Goodbye to Love and Solitaire
Olivia Newton-John - Please Mr. Please

You Better Sit Down Kids--Cher
Neither One of Us--Gladys Knight & the Pips
Sad Songs--Elton John
Yesterday's Gone--Chad & Jeremy
Now That You've Gone--Connie Stevens

Ain't no Sunshine....Bill Withers
Its a Heartache...Bonnie Tyler
Its my Party (and I will cry)..Leslie Gore
What about us?...The Coasters

Ebony Eyes...Everly Brothers
So Sad (to watch good love go bad) ...Everlies
Laurie (strange things happen) ...Dickey Lee

If You Leave Me Now - Chicago
Too Late to Turn Back Now - Cornelius Bros. & Sister Rose
Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O' Sullivan

Tell Laura I Love Her - Ray Peterson

Patches - Dickie Lee

Moody River - Pat Boone

Gone - Ferlin Husky

Paint It Black - The Rolling Stones

I think the reason "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" was a hit is because so many of us were fighting with our girl friend's Mothers who didn't like the guy their daughter was dating at the time. I know in my case I was encouraging my girl friend to get along with her Mother since they were fighting all the time about me....Fast forward 45 yrs....We broke up, she became exactly like her Mother and I have never regretted the day I broke up with her. Like is funny.

I Can't Help It - Hank Williams; Sad Movies Make Me Cry - Sue Thompson; He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones; If Drinking Don't Kill Me Her Memory Will - George Jones; Tears On My Pillow - Little Anthony; You Don't Know What You Got Until You Lose It - Ral Donner; Crying - Roy Orbison; Lonely Blue Boy - Conway Twitty; Lonely Boy - Paul Anka; Lonely For You - Gary Stites; Lying Eyes - Eagles; She's Gone- Conway Twitty (?); Goodbye Jimmy Goodbye - Kathy Linden; Soldiers Last Letter - Ernest Tubb & others I think; Ballad Of The Green Beret - Sgt Barry Sadler

MacArthur's Park- Richard Harris
Good Time Charlie's Got the Blue -Danny O'keefe
Funeral For a Friend-Elton John
Tear in My Beer-Hank Williams
Living Years-Mike and The Mechanics
Toy Soldiers-Martika
Come Monday-Jimmy Buffet

The End of the World - Skeeter Davis
She Cried - Jay Black
This Time - Troy Shondell
Tragedy - The Fleetwoods

Yes, Lonely Saturday Night was on Lancer records and started slow but built up, a tremendous song & Don French sounded like Elvis on that record. Should have had more hits. I have a great copy if anybody would want me to record.
