Sad Town for Rock

In the car this morning. HJY was in commercial. BRU some dude was chatting away. BCN no longer around. I suddenly felt a void. I wanted to rock out and I realized that it wasn't going to happen. So I just chose the best option. Matty. Still didn't do a damn thing for me musicly. I learned that Matt's going to a greek wedding this weekend though if that's worth anything to anybody.

Matty was the best option? You are in RI? I dont recall an apocolyps happenning this morning. Matty is terrible and should stay up in Boston where he belongs. As for hjy and bru, I like bru in the am because I dont find them chatty at all. I am stumped at how you can think bru is chatty and then turn the Boston windbag on. Very confused.

It's morning drive. Most don't want to rock out during morning drive. That isn't the intent of morning shows. Naturally you pick your format but morning selling points are the personalities. I'll agree when you're in the car regardless of what daypart sometimes you just want to hear the music but that would reduce morning shows to what's aired the rest of the day. Some stations may be more music intensive than others but those who care only about the music probably aren't even listening to the radio in the morning. As far as Matty I think he's a poor choice for Providence and I really don't care for his act but you have to look at him as a Boston personality with a history. Take any morning personalities from this market and transplant them somewhere else and you'd run into the same situation. I like Giovanni and Kim. I like Paul and Al. Both shows have faults but who doesn't. Still they wouldn't play as well outside Providence if they were piped into another market. The longer you stay in a market the more credibility you have but that credibility doesn't extend outside the market. Some Providence morning people would have a hard time even getting a job outside Providence at this point even if the job market were better. The rest of the dayparts are more generic but ironically those jocks would stand a better chance of landing another gig because of the generic sound.

That is just it, you hit the nail right on the head whether you know it or not. I dont like Matty because I dont want to listen to Boston this and that, I dont even like Boston sports teams but that is a whole other matter. I just never cared for Boston media. I love Geo and Kim but they are pretty much wrapping up during my commute. Paul and Al are good too but I need to be in the mood for them. Mostly I switch over to The Morning Mashup on Sirius 1 after Geo and Kim. When you look ist it from my perspective, I guess, take a show like Morning Mashup. It is white labeled enough to cater to the US as a whole as a market and they do a pretty good job of it. When listening to local or terrestrial radio I look for the locality, local radio in RI should be RI this and that, not Boston this or that. Not sure if you see where I am comming from but its just my perspective.

I know the deal in the Morning. Not as music intensive. I didn't care. I was in the mood for music. I was out of luck though. Yeah I turned on BRU and heard chat. Not interesting chat though. So I put on Matty. Good chat. I like the guy. Always have. He's funny without trying. Some people put on an act. Others are just naturally funny. Know what I mean? I know what I like. Surprised not more people in RI like him. I guess I'm the oddball.

John, I think you realize that radio can't cater to your every mood. Tomorrow you might be in the mood for comedy bits & will post here complaining that all you heard was music. It's a radio market...not a salad bar. Anything you want at any given moment isn't always going to be there. I'm surprised more posters here aren't into just finding a station they can live with because they like the total package of the music & personalities, which leads me to believe too many people here just don't like radio. Either that or it's the world's lack of patience with anything.

With internet radio on the brink of being here, and with i-pods and other personal devices already here, that's not going to be true for very much longer. IT WILL be a salad bar!!

The business isn't quite ready for that yet...but they better get ready....and real soon.

Yes I was going to add something to that effect & it really sucks to have to program to a society with no patience, no attention span, & no ability to sit through more than 60 seconds of something they don't like. Maybe if programmers didn't have to worry about our skittish society they could concentrate on putting out a product that entertains. I don't blame radio. I blame the spoiled rotten listeners who force stations to cater to them & regardless of what's on the radio, the world isn't going to be satisfied anyway because they're too busy downloading, listening to music on their Ipods, Iphones, texting, streaming, etc. Eventually every station will sound like that God awful TMZ TV show & everyone's head will explode.

I'm never disappointed listening to WBRU, knowing that there is ALWAYS a live jock playing music and doing a show, even if their skills are lacking compared to some of the other stations. BRU still plays a good blend of older and newer alternative, and many times goes against the mainstream alternative trends for some tracks in their rotation.

That is where I am differant I guess. I want the local guy talking especially in the AM. My bone of contention is all the bird feed and voice tracking.

Then you get the PPM. John with 6 computers going at once, streaming 3 different stations simultaneously, texting Howie Mandell, tweeting, & searching for podcasts gets a migraine, carpal tunnel, and X's & O's from Harvey Levin.

LMAO! Yeah that is pretty much my day. I'm playing Tennis today. Then I will tweet about it to Howie later while simultaneously streaming 3 stations and talking to Harvey on the phone. haha
