Sad, yet funny use for an old turntable

Earlier tonight I was watching one of those episodes of "How It's Made" I had taped a few weeks ago, from the Discovery channel. In this episode, they were showing how one company makes wine glasses.

In the step where it mentioned how the glass was separated from the firing rod base, they stated the process is done with a torch, as the glass revolves on an old "record player". The tone arm was still attached.

So we've gone from spinning wax to spinning glass? :p

Guess it goes right up there with turning an old ITC cart machine, into a working table lamp...

Haven't seen that one yet. Love the show. What did they do about the pin in the center?

It appears to me the pin was removed.

I used an old turntable once as a kind of agitator for making PCBs.

By sitting the turntable on a slight lean, and placing the etching tray on the platter, at the slowest speed of 16 rpm
it would agitate the ferric chloride solution nicely and keep it sloshing over the board.

Nice stories, but I actually use my old '60s vintage AR for playing records. It is great for searching for the satanic messages since it will rotate backwards if started with a little hand help on power up.

Had to get rid of the old Delrin bearing housing and fashion my own but it still works. Way to go Edgar!

I would think that the electric motors on some of those old transcription turntables would power a small electric car. You could even use the gearshift off those old Gates TTs. You'd need a pretty long extension cord, though.
