Safe '90s songs for WOGL

EDIT: Sorry, I just edited this to remove a handful of titles I meant to delete before I posted it.

Continuing the thought from the earlier '90s-music-on-WOGL thread: WOGL or any other Classic Hits could probably have been very safely putting many (if not all) of the below songs in rotation for the past few years while removing '60s tracks. I thought the earlier thread said that WOGL was playing fewer 90s, so to create a viable format for WTDY.

It did. The conversation wound from there to what decades Classic Hits stations should be playing, and eventually to a short thread about whether '90s should be on Classic Hits at all. (Obviously, I think in 2018, there should be lots of '90s on Classic Hits.)

But the situation in Philadelphia is that there are multiple classic hits stations. So they're differentiating themselves by focusing on different decades.

Seems to me that as a listener, all you should care about is being able to hear your favorite songs. There's no purpose in defining radio formats. Especially when those formats are fluid, based on specific market competition.

Hey Miguelito. That is a pretty good list, but I don't understand why the list has to be safe. I think you could play some pop rap and hair bands. I think it would fit with some of the Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and Guns n Roses that they already play. As far as WTDY playing 90s...it looks to me that they are back to playing about 2 80s an hour. The rest seems like early 2000s. I am not seeing a lot of 90s on the station.

Part of the discussion of Classic Hits adding '90s was about how fragmented pop music became during the decade and how many of the songs might be tune-outs nowadays. I thought, 'I'll bet I could look at just the first 4 or 5 years of the decade and find plenty of songs to add that aren't offensive and likely test pretty well.' So that's what I tried to do.

I don't want to hear a day when stations don't define what they're trying to do and everyone just starts playing what tests well. LOL. I'm pretty happy with stations deciding on a sort of programming mission. But I will say this: I don't think Entercom should say "let's put the '80s stuff on WOGL and the '90s stuff on WTDY." I feel like Classic Hits can go up to the mid '90s and WTDY can take care of stuff from then on.
(BTW: What station in Philly besides WOGL do you consider Classic Hits? BEN?)

Nineties at Noon

WOGL could try a "Nineties at Noon" block to gauge the reaction.

BEN would be WOGL's closest competition. They've steered hard back into the 80s recently... and WOGL has run liners (and I've heard the jocks mention too) saying "Nobody plays more 80s than WOGL!"

Listening to Ben today during a long stretch, and while it’s not like they ever left the 80s, but, yeah, they’re living there now, with a splash of 90s from what I hear. Sounds like a bit more pop alongside the rock than perhaps in previous phases, and while certainly sharing a lot with WOGL it feels like they’re a bit more prone to hit the harder edges (without doing anything crazy).

I can’t put my finger on exactly why I have this vibe, but personally they feel like they’re closer to a throwback to Eagle 106 than they’ve been before.
