Saga upgrades its Franklin County FM signals

Saga Communications is in the process of upgrading its Franklin County Class A FM signals WRSI (93.9) and WHAI (98.3), along with its FM translators W222CH (92.3) and W298CA (107.5). The translators will continue to simulcast WPVQ (700 kHz, Orange-Athol) and WHMQ (1240 kHz, Greenfield), respectively. The upgrades will relocate the transmission of WRSI and W222CH (from Pocumtuck Rock in Deerfield), as well as W298CA (from the WHMQ tower in Greenfield), to the existing WHAI tower (off Old Albany Road in Greenfield). Furthermore, transmission of WRSI and WHAI will be diplexed using a new common antenna.

I travel I-91 every couple of weeks, sometimes more, and enjoy both WRSI and The Outlaw (W222CH). How much range north-south does the change in transmitter site look to bring these stations? Will I be able to hear 92.3 south of Northampton or north of Brattleboro? Will WRSI's signal reach south into Massachusetts? And will the 101.5 translator in Brattleboro still be necessary? As it is, both 93.9 and 101.5 are audible on my car radio there.

You may wish to pursue the embedded links to radio-locator in my original post. The target pages contain technical details as well as links to coverage maps of both present and proposed signals. The changes to 92.3 and 93.9 will increase the 60 dBμ service contour in almost all directions except southward. The most significant improvements along I-91 will probably be audible between Bernardston and Putney.

The southern reach of WRSI's signal is restricted owing to potential interference with first-adjacent WZMX. By moving its transmitter a few miles NNW to the WHAI tower, WRSI was permitted to nearly double its ERP from 2.5 kW to 4.9 kW. (Its HAAT will increase by six feet.) To diplex with WRSI, WHAI will move down its mast by 40 feet and increase its ERP from 2 kW to 2.4 kW. The change will increase WHAI's 60 dBμ service contour by several inches in all directions.
