Sage update, oh were art thou?!

Five weeks away from the "deadline" and we still don't seem to have the CAP-compliant update from Sage. Isn't it about time for us to get an update out boys? Some folks have stuff spread out over the countryside to have to drive to for updates. It's going to stink having to do that within a week period if that's the deal.

You know, I just had this discussion with a client today who asked "are we ready for the June 30th deadline?"

I answered no, you're not. And neither is anyone else.

Anyone got an IP address for a CAP/IPAWS server in the NJ area?? I sure don't.

Got a DASDEC I take care of that is receiving the CAP RWT from the feds. However, I have no local CAP server for Ohio and the state plan hasn't been updated since 2003...maybe in another 9 years they might actually have a server up and running.

I sure hope they get something out soon or a lot of folks are going to be scrambling at the last minute.

I have 10 of those stupid boxes to order. I emailed the guys at Sage and asked when the update would be available, they said this week. They have until close of business today to get the update out or I'm ordering Gorman units Monday. This is insane.

I'm about ready to order 7. If I don't see some action in about a week I'll cancel that order and go with the other guys. It's really just that simple. I'm not going further down the road if they don't get something out soon.

I have too...but the local installer for our govt interconnect still does not have the interface to their system to ours...go figure...JBI

Any feedback on the Gorman Redlich EAS to CAP unit. In the field report. Thanks.

Good Grief... you guys act like the world is going to stop turning if Sage doesn't have their update posted in time for the deadline. The Sage Endec is BY FAR the most used EAS unit on the market and has been for a long time. In fact, I know FEMA has purchased a large number of them for PEP stations nationwide. If the updated isn't ready, the GOV will be in the same boat everybody else is. The Endec is a great unit and obviously Sage is very aware of the CAP deadline. They even posted something TODAY on their website about getting the firmware ready. I would rather have a very common, long supported unit than some "Other" brand that might not support the thing in 5 years.

I mean seriously, what will happen if you update your Endec a week after the deadline? .... Nothing!
Life will continue on, the earth will keep spinning, the FCC will not come bust down your door and pull the tube out of your transmitter.

I have a client that just tried to order a Sage last week from BSW - out of stock; expected delivery date of late July. Maybe they'll get an updated one.

Client ordered a SAGE from BSW & was given the late July or perhaps August time table as well (this order was over 200 units down the list). Told them to post a copy of the order confirmation in the EAS booklet. So we know that there will be many stations missing the June 30 deadline.

The FCC is out for blood, J. They are under a budget crunch like everyone else and are looking ways to make up for it. It would not suprise me to see field agents looking for violators the week after the deadline. YOU may be willing to take that risk, however I refuse to expose my clients, who trust me to keep them from getting fined, to such risk.

I agree that Sage is the best box, that's why I have been waiting on them this long. However, if they can't get their act together in time (and they have known about this as long as we have) and get us an update to comply with a federal mandate, I'll find someone who can. And since Sage hasn't released their update to the public by 5 o'clock yesterday, I'll be placing orders for the Gorman units Monday morning.

I can't blame them for waiting to the last minute; they rolled the dice back in September and won with that last minute reprieve. It might even happen again. They have their hands full keeping the power on and the employees paid never mind the unfunded mandate cast upon them. They do have the order confirmation posted just in case.

We the broadcasters are the ones to get fined. The FCC lately is even nailing people for not having side lights. I've also heard of them almost inventing reasons to fine people anymore. Deep pockets like broadcasters and wireless are easy pick'ins. I am not happy that Sage has not seen the urgency in getting a COMPLIENCE device that we had to spend good money on to the point that it complies five weeks before "show time". What's going to happen is we will get the update that will be flawed most likely less than a week before the drop-dead date they'll toss out the "fix" which will make everyone scramble to do updates in the field. Real nice.

And before someone from Sage says that "it's the goverment" and their lack of progress on their end, let me say I'm 1000 times more discusted at their lack of responsibility for putting somthing out that works right in a reasonable time frame.

It didn't make sense to buy a product that was non-compliant.
So the link above announces they are testing it.
Fantastic. Eventually they will release it.
Then, when they finally have a compliant product, I will have to wait weeks to get one?
And then we will miss the deadline?
And then we will have to check the self-imposed fine checkbox on the renewal form.

Great Job!

I'd guess that the 60 day grace period will apply along with any necessary extension needed while waiting on any approved manufacturer.
