Saints Field Announcer

The guy who handled pregame and halftime, does a great job. Who is he? Last night was the first time at a Saints game in 5 years and first time hearing him. He belongs in the booth during the game too. Jerry Romig has no clue. During the game, he called Reggie Bush, Reggie Lewis. Called Mike McKenzie, Frank McKenzie. And, on another call, "Duece McAllister, right guard". Plus, numerous times left his mike on and you could hear him asking questions to his spotters. It sounds like Romig gets off saying, "first down Saints". It's time for him to be replaced as PA announcer.

In fairness to Jerry Romig, it may well be that when he said "Deuce McAllister, right guard," he may have been referring to the fact that Deuce ran off right guard, rather than making a mistaken reference to the position he plays.

I do know that Romig, who's been the PA announcer at Saints games for years, is revered by many Saints fans. It's likely that most who were in the Dome for the first time since the '05 pre-season were happy to hear the man's voice, especially his call of "First down!!!"

I'm sure he'll hang 'em up when he's good 'n' ready.

While I appreciate the compliments tossed in my direction, I am not in a hurry to "replace" anyone. This season marks my tenth with the Saints, and I am more than happy to be on the sidelines.

Mr. Romig is a bit of a legend in the New Orleans area. Read this to see what I'm talking about:

http://cache.zoominfo.com/cachedpage/?archive_id=0&page_id=244978774&page_url=%2f%2fwww.neworleans.net%2fliving%2ft-p%2findex.ssf%3f%2flivingstory%2flind021.html&page_last_updated=1%2f3%2f2002+6%3a56%3a16+AM&firstName=Jerry&lastName=Romig

As far as hearing Jerry ask questions of his spotter over the mic, that really wasn't his fault. We had a new P.A. system installed after Katrina. Jerry's old mic, a desktop model with push-button control, was replaced with a headset-worn version similar to the one I use to do P.A. for the New Orleans VooDoo. The layout of that mic takes some getting used to... I did the same thing the first time I used it in the N.O. Arena.

Again, thanks for the props, but as far as I'm concerned, Jerry has earned the right to decide if and when he will walk away from the P.A. booth. When that day comes, I simply want the chance to audition for his spot.

See you at the Dome.

Sincerely,
Chuck Edwards

Enjoy hearing you Chuck! You sound good. I'm sure Mr. Romig is a nice guy & stuff...but I can do without him. Personal preference. How 'bout getting us the "MAX" band for halftime! Love the "Marching 100" or what's left of them. Who's Don Banks?

Chuck Edwards,
If you have a chance to reply to this....if you have been the sideline announcer for the Superdome for the past ten years & I know Wayne Mack did the same job through the 1992 season....was a gentleman that did said duties between you & Wayne named Jack Clark?
Reply when you can.

More "Romigisms" from the Tampa Bay game Sunday...after Reggie Bush's first punt return in the second quarter, he was Reggie Lewis, again. When Michael Lewis returns, will he be Reggie Lewis too? Third quarter, McAllister was "goose". Fourth quarter, his mic was distorted to the point you couldn't understand him. Sounded like he had it half way down his throat. Pitiful.

Jerry Romig is a perfect example of the fact that all it takes to become an "icon" in New Orleans radio, television and various announcing duties is to just ... not die. Just be the world's worst at what you do, but outlive most of your peers, and suddenly you're a "legend" or an "icon".

Jerry Romig is listed 2nd under Buddy Diliberto in the category "So bad...Only in New Orleans". Bobby Hebert is a close 3rd. No wonder this city is a national joke.
