Saints in San Antonio--Team TV conflicts?

As you've probably heard, the New Orleans Saints will play three "home" games in San Antonio.

If the NFL follows its usual TV market rules, San Antonio would be a designated home market, and Austin would become a peripheral market. Under the usual rules, both markets would be required to carry the Saints games, should they be sellouts.

The first game is on October 2, with Buffalo coming to town. The game is scheduled for Noon, and would be on CBS. That would mean the Houston Texans game at the same time on CBS (at Cincinnati) would be knocked off KENS and KEYE.

Okay, I'll admit the Texans following is so-so. But what's more interesting:

For the October 16 game, Atlanta visits NO/SA at Noon on FOX. This is opposite the Giants at Cowboys game, also on FOX at the same time.

Same deal on December 24. Detroit comes in for a Noon game on FOX, opposite the Cowboys at Carolina, also a FOX game.

Might be more than a few irritated Cowboys fans in Central and South Texas, should they get blown off KABB and KTBC.

However, the game times, and even dates may be switched from the original slots. Will be interesting to see how TV coverage in that case would be handled.

I heard from a colleague that almost all Saints games are sell outs. The first one is. I am sure the Dec.24th game may be one of those not shown depending on Cowboy- Saints playoff standings. The disgruntled ones can go to a sports bar or get the NFL pkg from Directv or Dish..

Seeing the Saints temporary home in SA may become more full-time in the not too distant future, it does present an interesting situation on regional coverage of football in Texas.

Maybe not. The GM of the Fox affil in SA says they have no plans to change their schedule and that "San Antonio is a Cowboys market - period"

The Saints will stay in New Orleans.S.A. will not make an attempt to lure them permanently. They will use the "sellouts" as an attention getter to the NFL that SA can support a NFL franchise. They tried back in 1966 when the Chargers -Broncos played an exhibition game in the old AFL,but they didn't have a stadium and the crowd was not that great. This time they have a chance and a stadium that can be modified to expand.

Seeing that the Ala Mode Dome was built for football(remember the vikings?), It isnt that far off of a notion of the Saints setting up shop in SA for long term. But, it remains to be seen if the the Stinkerdome can be repaired or will face the wrecking ball.

Depending on how quickly N.O. is rebuilt, the Saints may be in S.A. for several years. I doubt that the Superdome is at the top of the re-building list!

Tiger Stadium holds 90,000 in Baton Rouge. The Alamo Dome ,60,000. The Saints will play at Tiger stadium next Year while The Superdome is dismantled and a new one takes its place.

I'm not convinced ANY pro-sports will come back to Louisiana. That may be the plan right now, but New Orleans will be a much smaller market after rebuilding. The last survey I saw (about a week old) said about 75% of evacuees don't plan on returning. I'm not sure it will have the economic base or the population to support pro-sports. It's already one of the smallest NFL and NBA markets.
