Saints OT: Where *IS* WVUE/Fox HD?

WVUE posts that the game is available on WVUE HD. Where is it available?? It's not in the Cox lineup, so who are they making local HD available to?

Cox cable is garbage.

OTA antenna..i have one btw ;D
Ah! Come around to the dark side, have we? I figured someone who touts XM and Sirius wouldn't stay analog forever.
Welcome to the clarity of high definition. ;D

Yes, Cox is lax about providing HD channels. An antenna is needed. You'll also notice that you can't plug it into your Cox cable box and switch back and forth, so you'll need to use another input.

Many people are dumping the cable companies and going with a dish for channels like Discovery HD, National Geographic HD or ESPN HD then going to the antenna for local channels and subchannels.

There is another FCC deadline coming in a few days--12/31/06, I don't know the details, but something about UHF stations and their DTV signals.

So, pardon my ignorance as this is my first experience with HD, but what kind of old-time outdoor antenna (rabbit ears???) do I need so I can get HD broadcasts? What channels are they on if an analog tuner is used?

Thanks for any help so I can better understand my Xmas present.

The game was pretty good in HD. I watched it. The picture was so great that I had some last minute christmas shopping to do, but could not move away from the TV because it was so good.

Of course maybe the Saints had something to do about me not wanting to leave. You what they say it's a bigger win emotionally in High Defintion, and a bigger loss in High Definition.

I am glad that my cable system stepped up to the plate and is offering WVUE-DT on cable. Vision Communications in Larose is practically the only system carrying WVUE-DT. On digital cable box channel 178, but if you live in South Lafourche or Central Lafourche and do not have a box, but a digital tuner in your TV you can catch it on channel 105-001 sometimes that "105-001" number varies on different TV's.

As far as reception of WVUE DT, the signal is pretty strong depending on how far you are from the transmitter depends on the size and amplification need to pickup the signal.

Before my cable system picked up WVUE, every away game it picked up WVUE-DT via a medium sized outdoor antenna and a preamp at about 70 to 80 percent in Cut Off.

The worst station for HD in New Orleans has to be WDSU, I cannot believe that they are still not on the air (digital) since Katrina. And in other forums about HD in New Orleans, it seems they keep on pushing the date back.

rabbit ears ;D thats funny. my outside antenna is 40 feet tall and it has a range of up to 212 miles vhf. or about 1/2 of that on hdtv.

here it is btw..

Depends on how far you are from the towers. If you can get a decent analog picture (not too much snow, no ghosts) then the same antenna should work for digital. I wouldn't be surprised if *indoor* rabbit ears would work fine if you're in New Orleans proper or an immediately adjoining suburb. It might even be worth trying plugging a few feet of wire into the antenna jack on the TV -- it's cheap, and the worst that can happen is it doesn't work & you've wasted a bit of wire and a few minutes of time...

The New Orleans digital stations are on channels 11, 15, 21, 29, 31, 36, 40, 43, and 50, but you don't need to know that<grin>. Your TV will "learn" (when you do the channel scan) which channels are available and what they want to call themselves.

For example, WYES (PBS) is on channel 11. But their transmitter is sending a signal that tells your TV to "tell your human we're channel 12 even though we're really channel 11". So to get a HD station, you'd punch in the same channel number you punch in to get its analog signal right now. Your set will probably get more than one channel 12 - punch in 12 and you'll probably get the analog; push channel-up and you get the digital. They might have more than one digital (with different programs), press channel-up again to get "12-2", etc... I don't have any information on subchannels in New Orleans, but I'd be surprised if there aren't any.

The rest of the stations do the same thing.

So, I'm in Metairie around Williams and Airline, about 8-10 miles as the crow flies from the CBD where the TV studios are located, but I have no idea where the TV station Xmtrs are, so is there any chance I could get good HD reception with some kind of indoor antenna here? If so, what kind? I'm not in physical shape to be climbing on the roof or up masts or towers for antenna installation. Thanks you any help.

6, 8, 12, 26 & 38 are on Paris Road/Chalmette, (26 & 38 closer to Bayou Bievenue)... 4 in Gretna near Stumpf Blvd behind Oakwood Shopping center. Don't know why 6 is taking so long, I heard Cable One on the MS Gulf Coast had to dump them 'cause their signal is so weak, and added NBC 15 out of Mobile/Pensacola (outcry after the crappy/snowy NBC Saints/Cowboy game broadcast...or lack thereof from 'DSU).

If you have TV Transmitters in multiple directions and don't want to deal with a roter (by hand or motor:) take a look at the omni-directional disk shaped antennas. The CHANNEL MASTER #3000A SMARTenna OMNI DIRECTIONAL TV ANTENNA on this web page http://www.starkelectronic.com/allant.htm is one, I believe Winegard makes one too. There are versions with, and without amplifiers, this one is amplified. The good thing is the amp makes up for line loss, especially if splitting for two TVs or a TV & VCR etc. I have one of these and @40ft up it gets analog and digital in a 50mile radius.

On the other hand, I have a 7' UHF dish at 110' (in Monroe) and can regularily get Alex, Jackson, Shv, & Little Rock digitals. But the disk antenna is simple to install and operate, but as with any antenna get it as high as you can.

Cool, would love to see the picture of that 7 foot dish at 110 feet....

Most unidirectional antennas I find are only good for suburbs, not as much as in the country (like 2 or more parishes over)... The directional like smashedcd has is what I use for analog tv (haven't gone digital yet) and isn't on a tower like you all but still does a good job of pulling most of the Baton Rouge and New Orleans stations when the cable goes to hell.

I do know North Louisiana has some impressive TV station signals there compared to South Louisiana I do know that (A portable TV can catch KNOE 8 and KAQY 11 down in Cenla from Caldwell Parish which is impressive)

Button Puncher was curious however on something... what's with all the LPTV and LPTV CPs south of you?
Surprised to see 2 LPTVs in Winnfield with a Cp for a translator for El Darado's channel 43 KEJB down 165 in Tullos

RFLA

I don't know what's up with 43 or the translators, seems like a money pit to me. I do know the guy who does 43's eng work (contract/part-time) so will ask next time I see him.

On the the antenna, I should have been more accurate and said parabolic, not dish, as it's not solid as "dish" could imply. It's a Channel Master 4251 that I've had in storage since the 80's and recently got motivated to put up again, used RG11 this time. Have a large VHF ant mounted under it. I have some photos of my setup you want, just suggest how to get them to you.

Here is some nut trying to sell the CM for $700(it sold for around $80): http://www.ultrasatellite.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=4251

The most regular DTV signal I get from south La is KLFY, have gotton some in BR, NO, & LC but conditions have to be groovin' for those to come in.

Cox dropping 4WWL's 15 news & possibly 4

4WWL has announced in a press release that effective 1/31/07 Cox Cable will drop channel 15/4 WWL's news rebroadcast and possibly channel 4 from their lineup. According to their website, Cox has even declined to continue carrying their analog signal.

I would bet that 4 will air their news rebroadcast on one of their DTV subchannels just like 9 WAFB and 2 WBRZ.

I say pull the plug on Cox, they were rude after Katrina to me and took me 8 months to get my deposit back.

Dumb decision by Cox.

Cox cannot (and probably will not) drop the #1 rated news station. If they do, it's an absolutely STUPID decision. WWL TV owns the New Orleans market and people will get their WWL, whether it's from E*, D*, or somewhere else.
