Saints Renew With WWL

The Saints renewed their contract with WWL for another 3 years. This should squelch the rumors that Benson is buying New Orleans Radio Stations.

mmmn I wouldn't be so quick to jump to that conclusion. Obviously he didn't have time to put it together on a radio station of his own for this season, but rest assured that Benson never signs any contract that doesn't favor Benson the most, and you can well believe that he's got an early escape clause in that 3-year contract. He's just covering his bet with the three years, pending the outcome of any radio negotiations, but you can bet your life he will likely own a radio station or two by this time next year, but definitely within three years, with the idea of keeping all the broadcast rights of his teams in his own pocket. Then it's gonna get interesting. The man is smart. That's why he's rich. My bet is that this is the final year for the Saints on WWL. Unless of course he buys WWL from stock-struggling Entercom which is entirely a possibility.

How do you make a small fortune in radio? Start with a large fortune.

Anyone that is buying radio now, especially AM radio, even if it is below stick value, is foolish. Entercom isn't going to part with WWL or the New Orleans cluster for nothing less than a small king's ransom. Benson would be better off buying KYRK (but, again, what fool would buy a standalone station?) or the Citadel cluster and retool it. Take one of the sticks and make them FM Sports and put the Saints on it. That would be a whole lot cheaper than buying WWL and it would have a bigger upside.

That is assuming Benson has someone who knows something about radio. Joe Cook doesn't.

PIGVOMIT says Nolaradiobuff is foolish for hating on AM radio. Why do you hate AM so much? Do you doubt it has listeners? It might not be you, but people do listen.

My old friend Pigvomit, I LOVE AM radio. I listen more to AM than music FM. I said it would be foolish to BUY an AM (or even a standalone FM). LISTEN all you like. Just don't invest. Only Billionaires like Dan Snyder are buying AM (and the morons that bought WGSO), and it was for a specific reason (to build his own network for the Redskins). Benson has money, but he's not a Billionaire.

But, to be clear: I LOVE AM RADIO. My children don't and, when they get into their teens, they won't even know what AM radio was. Maybe they won't know FM either.

Don't fool yourself. Benson has so much money that buying WWL or some other station would be like buying a toy. He could buy a single AM or a single FM and wouldn't give a care about anything else except that it's the station of his teams. He's *not* a radio person like Santa Claus at WWL. He just buys what he wants. You'll understand when you get filthy rich. Or if you get reincarnated as Mike Costello.

1 and out for WWL-AM. Watch.
