Salem Bumps Savage to Late Night on 99AM

Mikey Klein:
Talk station WNTP-AM (990) has moved Michael Savage's Savage Nation show three hours later, into the 9 p.m.-to-midnight slot, thwarting would-be callers because he's on tape. Occupying 6 to 9 p.m., live, is The Hugh Hewitt Show, hosted by the former Reagan administration aide.

Savage is still carried live on WOR710 from 6pm to 9pm. Given that WOR puts a good signal into much of the area, Salem may have thought it made to sense to air unduplicated programming (even if that means a less well-known host).

That's weird because HH is on live on 870 KRLA 3-6pm PDT and KRLA broadcasts Savage's show taped 6-9pm PDT. Do you think Salem cares what happens on a Buckley station?? Maybe? BTW Salem-owned KTIE (590 AM) in the Inland Empire carries Hugh's show live but from 3-5 pm while they air one hour of The Savage Nation 5-6 pm (don't know if it's live or not) while KFMB 760 San Diego airs Savage's show live 3-6 pm with an extra hour repeated 6-7 pm.

Sorry for the digression away Philadelphia radio ... I guess scheduling is a challenge for so many talk stations carrying so many local and/or syndicated talk show hosts! I wonder how many average listeners out there are aware of when a host is live or not --No one who visits here is in that category! ;D

Why WNTP moved Savage from live to delay

Salem is a right-wing company and Savage is extremely right wing to say the least. This might be an effort by WNTP to keep whatever advertisers it has in early evenings.

WPHT-1210 delays Bill O'Reilly to late evening for much the same reason.

WOR isn't a factor because WOR doesn't show up in the Philadelphia Arbitron.

No, the reasons for the two are the same. O'Reilly is on 1210 because CBS, owner of WPHT, also owns WW1 which distributes O'Reilly. No one else wants him = WPHT must have him.

Savage is being moved because Salem generally eschews airing non-SRN programming. Do you know any non-Salem station in America that wants Hugh Hewitt? Three or four tops. WNTP airs him live to keep corporate happy. They could care less about what WOR or anyone else is airing at what time. It has nothing to do with that.
