Salem buys Translator from Percy Squire for $150,000

If I'm reading this correctly, Salem bought Percy Squire's translator (now 95.9 the Drum) for $150,000. Squire had bought it for $50,000 from, IIRC, Steve Tuckerman.

A Columbus translator is worth $350,000 to Salem.
That’s even though the translator sold for $50,000 just a couple of years ago. In 2014, Percy Squire bought then-W294AH at 106.7 for 50 grand...

CORRECTION:
As per article quote, SOLD FOR $350,000, not $150,000.

Tom’s missing a few pieces here.

Percy’s Translator is relaying HD4 of 98.9 but the programming is not Salem’s. Percy’s programming 95.9 currently using the HD4 of 98.9 (since translators can’t directly originate their own content).

I can sure bet the answer is that once the sale clears Salem will move to program the translator using their own content. I would not be surprised if WRFD AM 880 (which correct me if I am wrong as I don’t have an HD Radio) is already being heard 24/7 on one of 98.9’s HD channels (or was at one point). If it’s not I would not put it past Salem putting it on 95.9.

WRFD translator application

something else to go with this, SPRYEX COMMUNICATIONS filed to move their translator from Atwood Ky to columbus, the next day Salem filed to buy that for WRFD as part of the FCC AM revitalization plan.

that said it looks like 95.9 is a much better signal, but if salem does launch both will they let Perry lease one of the signals, or now that he has some money, is he looking to buy. He has always wanted WVKO back. i don’t think the FM is available but the AM might be for sale.

Good catch. I hadn't seen that one yet. I only mentioned WRFD earlier because Salem typically don't run day-timers and they have been locked with WRFD for years for their brokered religious programming. I can't imagine them not wanting a 24/7 signal to help increase the income made.

Re: Percy I honestly think he got a good deal there. Paid 50k sold for 350k. Honestly when you have WVKO AM doing Gospel and now that Radio One has 107.1, 107.5, 106.3 and 95.5 locked up with Urban programming Percy being able to go against them with a small translator was going to be an uphill battle.

Unless Salem also leases 880 to Squire, it can't do a translator switch for quite awhile. The Atwood translator is required to rebroadcast 880 for four years if its move into Columbus is approved and built out.

Interesting. I guess that means Salem would do something else with the 95.9 translator that they are purchasing from Percy.

The request to move http://fccdata.org/?facid=152209 W283CL from KY to Columbus, OH to be a translator for WRFD AM 880 @ 104.5 Mhz has been approved as of 2/22/16. The approval of transfer from SPRYEX to Salem is still pending.
