Salem Dropping Spanish Christian for Money Talk on 105.5

From Radio-Info's Main Page:

"Radio Luz" KSAC-FM, Dunnigan, CA expires this weekend, with Salem debuting "Money Talk 105.5" on Monday, January 3. The new lineup features a 7-9am show from local businessman Mark Montgomery, plus content from Bloomberg, and syndicated personalities such as Ray Lucia, Ron Insana, Phil Grande and Tom O'Brien. Salem also does financial talk formats in Seattle (KKOL/1300) and San Francisco (KDOW/1220). The Sacramento station will be branded as "Money 105.5 FM, Wall Street Radio Network."

Really? A money talk format in Sacramento, and on FM?

Wait, let me check the calendar... No, it's not April 1st. Ouch, I just pinched myself too, so it must be real

What's next, maybe flipping the switch back on and simulcasting on 1420 in Stockton?

Business radio is the longest-running failure in the history of radio. Anyone who thinks liberal talk is the benchmark of failure... compared to business talk, Air America is a glorious success!!

Only one business -format station has drawn more than a one share in the 25-year history of the format. In one Eastern market, this format has been tried and rejected by the marketplace FIVE TIMES since 1990. It isn't really a format -- just window dressing for time-brokering.

Why is Salem charging so hard into business talk?

Yeah, too often we tend to equate ratings with revenue. That's quite valid for many operations, and that's what most people on this board are familiar with. But what really matters is how well a format can be sold. The Salem station in the Bay Area is consistently on the bottom of the ratings. But they manage to sell time. That's what counts.

It may be different this time.

When economic times were good and people thought their jobs and futures were secure, why bother listening to business and finance? Now out of necessity, they might.

One good thing -- it'll let Sacramento be known for something other than government. There's this perception that's the only way to make a living here.

And speaking of embracing repeated failures and rejections, it's not the first time Sacramento radio does that. There was this guy with the same initials as the Rio Linda he mocks. He was rejected by 9 stations prior in other markets, then came here in 1988 and turned things around. He did that for himself and the format other experts in the industry said he couldn't keep doing.

So if it's insanity to do the same thing and expect different results, let Sacramento private sector go crazy with this and enjoy it, maybe even making money talking money (like some of those paid programming spots put it.)

They've been broadcasting mono for several years now. It's Salem's solution to make the signal more listenable in eastern parts of the valley.
