Salem expands into Orlando

Post found on the Dallas board------------------

From Radio and Records:

Salem Inks Station Swap

The company is exchanging its Gospel KNIT/Dallas for James Crystal Broadcasting's Business Talk WORL/Orlando in an even swap valued at more than $6 million. KNIT was owned by Univision until last year, when Salem obtained it as part of its major station swap with that company.

The deal marks Salem's entry into Orlando, the nation's No. 39-ranked market. John Pierce & Co. was the exclusive broker for the transaction.

-------------------------------

I wonder what route this station will go but would assume it will be ran out of Tampa. Salem runs conservative talk 860 WGUL Bay area & 930 WLSS Sarasota plus religious 570/910 WTBN serving Tampa and Lakeland. Considering the fact that that Salem owns a stand alone in Miami I would assume the news/talk format pops up on 660 WORL.

This move should help WORL achieve that coveted 0.3 share in the next ratings book : )

Thanks for making me "spit" soup out my nose. Good one....

I think the Salem SRN News-Talk format is a lock for WORL. It has been a very long time since Salem has launched a Christian Talk & Teaching station. The Christian Talk format in Orlando is pretty well covered already.

Speaking of which, does anyone think this might lead to a purchase of WTLN and WHIM from Moffit?

Hey, Salem DOES have 107.9 out of Honolulu, HI with Oldies, bought out from Cox.

Maybe someone's listening to the still-angry but loyal 100.3 listeners and advertisers? 660 doesn't have a bad coverage area for 1kw, and it would work more to their advantage than grabbing that 0.3 next book with N/T, or better yet, 0.0, hence WKAT Miami. Classical on AM at near a 2 dropping to nothing when the flip to Salem N/T went down.

If the Korge brothers could've held out longer with 1360 Miami...

Just my .02.

My bets for 660:

1) A third partner for the 570/910 simulcast.

2) Salem's conservative talk with Gallagher, Medved, etc.

Buying WORL shows how desperate Salem is to get into Orlando.

Interesting that they would bite this off as they are still in the process of digesting WGUL and WLSS in Tampa and Sarasota.

This could be one of the few Salem AM acquisitions to see ratings go UP after its acquisition. Certainly anything Salem puts on will be better than James Crystal's nota-format.

That is funny....I remember someone posted a bogus press release a while ago that said that Salem was getting into Orlando, and the company went through great lengths to deny it...

OLDIES on 660?

Music on AM = losing proposition.
