Salem News: WBOQ drops Jackie Ankeles

http://www.salemnews.com/opinion/x712214260/Letter-Local-radio-personality-bids-listeners-farewell

>>This week I was informed that due to changes in the radio industry and in the direction of the station, my daily midday program was being cancelled — effective immediately...Because my departure was so sudden (it's the nature of the business), I didn't get to say goodbye to my loyal listeners.

After 22 years Jackie is out at North Shore 104.9. She thanks her listeners in this letter to the Salem News.

I don't know what she means by a change in the direction of the station; as far as I know it will continue its current format but maybe they just mean to save $ by having automation on instead. The WBOQ site says
they still have Charlie Curtis in the morning (and then there's an empty box, for now, which used to have
her info...) I would think they'd continue with "good time favorites"/Sox baseball and a bit of a local
connection but if they keep laying off people, how soon till they become just another jukebox? (In which case
we might redub them North Snore 104.9...)

I'd opt for Titanic 104.9...

One of the letters in response to Jacky's letter reads in part: "Thank you Jacky. 22 years is an eternity in the radio business and you are up there with many of radio's legends for time spent on air. Abrupt changes in format are more the norm than the exception in radio and often the loyal listeners are simply left behind."

Again, Jacky's letter refers to "another direction" WBOQ seems to be taking (uh, down the drain?) but I don't know if this signals a format change or not. Would think their mix of oldies, etc with a local focus (yeah but with what, one local host daily, otherwise comp.?) would be a good sell to advertisers but what else would they run?
Smooth jazz, country, R&B, pop, syndie talk? Somehow can't picture it. Cert. not classical I'd think...what else might they run if not the current mix?
Jacky seemed nice on and off air. Saw her introducing acts at North Shore Jazz Project fundraiser at a Bev. restaurant

In the past month or two they seem to have shifted from classic hits (70's and 80's) to a mainstream oldies format (50's-70's).

It's only minor tweaking to their music format, putting a little more rotation on early '60s through early '70s music and little less on late '70s and '80s (probably to make them more distinct from the directions of WODS, WROR, etc...). There are still only just a few greatest hits of the late '50s, and those were there all along. The '80s music is still there, just less often in rotation. I heard "Night Shift" by The Commodores (1985) when I checked it out a couple of hours ago. However, the minor music tweak really has nothing to do with letting a longtime host go for automation.

For a station that bills itself as your hometown radio station, and has always had such a talent focused format, I'm just amazed that she got the boot.

Maybe those Red Sox broadcast rights are eating into the bottom line, to the point they had to cut mid day talent out to keep the red ink to a minimum.

Depending on where I am in MA/NH on any given day, I listen to WBOQ, WATD or WPLM, mostly because I like the format ant the talent. Most of the time I am north of Boston, so WBOQ gets the nod. OK her recipe segment wasn't my favorite, but I could deal with it.

I never did get to thank Jackie for the Sylvan Street Grille gift certificate, I took mom there last week for a yummy lunch.

Just a little fact for you guys. There were three stations called "The Wave" at one point. WHAV (the original wave), the old 87.9 FM, and A station on 96.7 (WQSO). All within miles of each other and all with basically the same format. Then 96.7 Went Talk (Kept The Name Though), WHAV stayed the same, and 87.9 became an online only station. I wonder if the owners all know each other ??? lol

Then again, most sports radio stations don't seem to have problems with a Red Sox broadcast contract - then again, they probably don't need to report to ASCAP and BMI, because they most likely don't play a lot of music... like WBOQ does...

Don't forget that the Sox asked Entercom for cash up front this season and in turn Entercom demanded their payments from Sox affiliates earlier than usual. That may be why WCRN dropped them, and that may be why there's a cash flow problem with WBOQ.
