Salem Radio is Completely Gone in Cincinnati

Salem Radio Network is no longer broadcasting in Cincinnati. In September 2005, Salem sold their last two outlets (Christian Talk WTSJ-AM 1050 and Conservative Talk WBOB-AM 1160) to Christian Broadcasting System in exchange for WLQV-AM 1500 in Detroit. Christian Broadcasting System mentioned earlier that they plan to keep a Christian Talk format on WTSJ and WBOB has been stunting mainstream oldies all weekend long. If WBOB goes mainstream oldies, I believe this will be the first non-Christian format operated under the Christian Broadcasting System company.

In the late 90's, Salem also owned Country WYGY-FM 96.5 before they sold that station to Susquehanna. I was surprised that they didn't place their CCM Fish format on that signal since WYGY is usually a mediocre Country outlet in Cincinnati and there is no local CCM in the market. Air 1 and K-Love are the only CCM outlets and WAKW-FM 93.3 is a Christian MOR station. In a conservative market like Cincinnati, it is hard to believe that Salem wasn't able to find a successful approach in this market. Clear Channel is doing well with their brand of News/Talk programming on WLW-AM 700 and WKRC-AM 550.
Edited by The RadioFan on 02/13/06 05:09 AM.

Don't Count Salem Out of Cincy Forever

Those folks are shrewd operators. They had desires on that heritage Christian signal in Detroit, and were willing to part with multiple properties to get it.

It wouldn't surprise me to see them return to Cincinatti one day to purchase another heritage AM'er...once one of the mega-cluster owners decides to quit throwing $$$ at it.

But then, what do I know about this city? And as for Salem, I haven't worked for Stu Epperson since about 1978. Esse quam videri.

Hmm...Possibly! There are several AM outlets in Cincinnati beside those owned by Clear Channel. However, most of them contain fairly weak signals. WCIN-AM 1480 is currently up for grabs, but it has serious technical problems. Newstalker WPFB-AM 910 of Middletown, Ohio covers parts of Dayton and Cincinnati, but the signal is not strong enough for great reception in the metropolitan area, especially at night. The best option for a Salem return may be the current Catholic station WNOP-AM 740. Gospel WCVG-AM 1320 and Christian Teaching WCNW-AM 1560 are two other outlets that may be an option. I don't think Blue Chip Broadcasting is ready to give up on Radio One's LMA of WDBZ-AM 1230. But, who knows?

Anyone know if Ryan Moran is still with Salem Columbus? I don't talk to him often, but I would like to know he's still out there. I know he used to cover Columbus and Cincinatti, and with Cinci gone, I'm curious what he's up to.
______________
